    COMMUNITY IMPACT INTERNSHIP

    The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students the opportunity to work in the field of public health at a premier non-profit organization with an impeccable reputation for promoting a healthy lifestyle free from cardiovascular disease and stroke. Under close supervision and mentorship of experienced public health professionals, students will apply classroom learning to practical problems. Throughout this process students will develop and strengthen skills such as: research methods, health communication, and community engagement.

    Students will enhance their existing skill set by learning strategies to improve health outcomes in diverse communities by conducting health education workshops, developing, and implementing outreach strategies to specific racial ethnic minority communities, and create culturally competent resources that can be utilized by these communities to prevent or manage cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and stroke.

    INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:

    • Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week

    • Internship Duration: Fall

    • Work done primarily remote with some in office work

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Orient students to the principles and practices of public health planning, research administration and evaluation.

    • Expand student’s understanding of public health by increasing their awareness of cultural needs, and challenges of connecting resources to diverse populations.

    • Students will learn the benefit of strategic partnerships between health care professionals, businesses, and community-based organizations to improve population health.

    • Students will learn how to identify and execute policy, systems, and environment changes that lead to health equity

    • Deepen student’s understanding of the differences between community programs and policy changes as it relates to social determinants of health such as income, education, built environment and access to medical care.

    • Assistance in coordinating and communicating with community impact staff

    • Working with community impact staff on technical assistance with community partners

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students with interest in contributing toward a voluntary health organization. Can be recently graduated

    • Interested in public policy, public health, health equity, political institutions, media advocacy, nonprofit communications, and marketing

    • Bilingual Spanish Speaking preferred, but not required

    • Ability to learn quickly, have focused attention to detail, and a reliable work schedule

    • Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills

    • Ability to work remotely in professional settings

    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

    • Ability to use virtual platform programs (Zoom, MS Teams)

    • Learners who are motivated to seek challenges within a fast-paced, dynamic setting
