    COMMUNITY IMPACT INTERNSHIP

    The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

    Students will enhance their existing skill set by learning strategies to improve health outcomes in diverse communities by conducting health education workshops, developing, and implementing outreach strategies to underserved and rural communities, and create culturally competent resources that can be utilized by these communities to prevent or manage cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and stroke.

    The Association offers many resources to help you maintain work-life harmonization through your changing needs and life situations. To help you be successful, you will have access to Heart U, our award-winning corporate university, as well as training and support locally and through our National Center.

    INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:

    • Time Commitment: 20 – 25 hours per week
    • Internship Duration: May 22-August 11
    • Remote with potential to be hybrid. Intern must be based in San Antonio/Central TX area.
    • Salary: $23.00 per hour

    INTERNSHIP OUTCOMES:

    Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

    • Gain important and practical job skills to be successful in a non-profit environment.
    • Opportunity to explore a career-path with a reputable voluntary health/service organization
    • Gain experience in the professional world while learning about board management.
    • Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Orient students to the principles and practices of public health data collection, planning, research, administration, and evaluation.
    • Expand student’s understanding of public health by increasing their awareness of cultural needs, and challenges of connecting resources to rural populations.
    • Students will learn the benefit of strategic partnerships between health care professionals, businesses, and community-based organizations to improve population health.
    • Deepen student’s understanding of the social determinants of health such as income, education, built environment and access to medical care.
    • Gain experience in assessing community health needs and evaluating evidence-based solutions to address those needs.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students with interest in contributing toward a voluntary health organization. Can be recently graduated.
    • Interested in public policy, public health, political institutions, media advocacy, nonprofit communications, and marketing.
    • Ability to learn quickly, have focused attention to detail, and a reliable work schedule.
    • Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills.
    • Ability to work remotely in professional settings.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
    • Ability to use virtual platform programs (Zoom, MS Teams)
    • Learners who are motivated to seek challenges within a fast-paced, dynamic setting.
