The Nutrition Security internship offers the opportunity to gain professional experience with a national non-profit organization where nutrition is a top priority. The American Heart Association improves access to healthy food by strengthening systems and empowering consumers to make healthy choices. The intern would have a passion for identifying gaps and solutions supporting the American Heart Association’s nutrition security business plan and strategies.

The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

Individuals will obtain practical experience and receive hands-on training in various disciplines, to include volunteer recruitment/management, community event planning and management, public health research, community partner networking/connection, and program development/implementation.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:

• Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week

• Internship Duration: 5/22/2023 – 8/11/2023

• Remote Position

• Salary: $23.00 per hour

INTERNSHIP OUTCOMES:

Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

• Gain experience in the professional world while learning about board management

• Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Research and reporting

• Research the nutrition education curriculum used within Healthy for Life Cooperative Extension.

• Conduct online research supporting the development of Healthy for Life educational materials, focused on Spanish resources.

• Participate in Nutrition Consumer Research process to develop messaging and create slides to convey and communicate research results to various internal and external stakeholders.

• Conduct research using online sources (e.g., food and nutrition issues, stakeholders, trends, etc.) and present internally to inform programs. Individuals with nutrition expertise will include scientific literature in research where relevant.

• Marketing & communications support

• Develop promotional resources for Cooperative Extension engagement.

• Edit materials (e.g., slide decks, one-pagers, etc.) and coordinate review with internal stakeholders.

• Map out topics and/or write for monthly Healthy for Life e-newsletter.

• Resource and content audit

• Conduct an audit of existing materials to identify gaps with respect to topics (within the scope of AHA’s scientific statements), budget-friendly guidance, and cultural relevance, informing new resource development.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Undergraduate course work in human nutrition and foods, food science, food systems, and/or culinary arts preferred.

• Demonstrated ability to research health topics and translate findings into actionable guidance.

• Demonstrated excellence in written communications skills, including writing on health topics for promotional or educational outcomes.

• Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.

• Ability to deal professionally in a corporate or non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion.

• Effective oral, written and presentation communication skills

• Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities

• Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

• Bi-lingual (Spanish) is a plus

• Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.

• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
