    We have an exciting opportunity for an intern on our National Science Media Relations team. In this role, the intern has opportunities to learn hands-on how the Science Media Relations team promotes the research published in the organization’s 14 peer-reviewed scientific journals and/or presented at the our 8 scientific meetings annually, and how the team collaborates with colleagues across the Marketing and Communications division, the Office of Science Operations, the Science and Medicine division, and throughout the organization.

    The intern will provide support to and collaborate with the science media relations team in the selection and production of promotion materials for top science published in the our peer-reviewed scientific journals and scientific meetings including learning how studies are selected for promotion; various strategies and tactics for pitching to media; handling media inquiries and expert interviews; and performing general duties to support the Science Media Relations team.

    The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

    Individuals will obtain practical experience and receive hands-on training in various disciplines, to include volunteer recruitment/management, community event planning and management, public health research, community partner networking/connection, and program development/implementation.

    INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:

    • Time Commitment: 20 hours per week

    • Internship Duration: 5/22/2023 – 8/11/2023

    • Remote Position

    • Salary: $23.00 per hour

    INTERNSHIP OUTCOMES:

    Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

    • Gain important and practical job skills to be successful in a non-profit environment

    • Gain experience in the professional world while learning about board management

    • Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Assist in supporting the team for the weekly review of articles publishing in the AHA’s 14 scientific journals.

    • Assist in the review of science selection process for scientific meetings.

    • Assist in the development of a news release.

    • Assist in drafting support materials for promotion such as (resource links, internal tools, photos or other multimedia, etc.

    • Assist with proofreading of press materials.

    • Assist in pulling media coverage reports and tracking of, top media clips, hyperlinks for media dashboard report and overall reports Assist in researching new collaboration opportunities and new strategies and tactics.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Prefer candidates who are juniors, seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in journalism, news writing, communications or science writing, or public health with an interest in non-profit and health care communications.

    • Strong awareness of and interest in current events and what’s in the news daily related to health care, heart disease, stroke and nonprofit organizations.

    • Proficiency in AP Style.

    • Knowledge of Adobe Suite a plus.

    • Demonstrated excellence in written communications skills.

    • Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.

    • Ability to deal professionally in a corporate or non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion.

    • Effective oral, written and presentation communication skills

    • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities

    • Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

    • Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.

    • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
