  • Responsibilities

    Provide culturally responsive integrated substance abuse disorders and mental health assessments, treatment planning, case management, and counseling/therapy to families, couples and individuals of all ages. In addition, lead group therapy and psychoeducation sessions and participate in outreach and prevention efforts. Assist with the day-to-day operations of the Behavioral Health Program in the Oonalaska Wellness Center, based in Unalaska. Attend community meetings and activities with vital community partners (e.g., school, shelter, etc.). Adhered to professional ethics and mandated standards of practice including documentation requirements. Exemplary personal and professional conduct in the remote setting is expected. Hours of work are 7.5 hours per day, 5 days a week, with shared support of afterhours behavioral health crisis response.

    Required Skills

     

     

    Assist with day-to-day operations of the OWC Behavioral Health Program, to include: ensuring weekly staffing is completed; attend community meetings to provide and receive input on services provided; and network with other local health providers to coordinate services for clients. Develop a good working relationship with Court system, Police Department, USAFV, Unalaska City School, and other community resources available.

     

    • Provide scheduled individual client assessments, counseling and treatment planning, comprehensive chart management, group outpatient sessions, individual/family interventions, and Alcohol/Drug Information School (ADIS). Conduct Client Case Reviews with the Behavioral Health Administrator as needed.  Provide 24 hour emergency response as needed.
    • Provide outreach and referral services to community members requesting mental health and substance abuse services.
    • Coordinate public information announcements with local radio and television stations on behavioral health issues. Participate in developing and organizing health promotion activities and Health Fair activities.
    • Coordinate and facilitate public information workshops and presentations in the community regarding substance abuse/mental health issues to include prevention/intervention and treatment resources.
    • Participate in trainings and workshops to achieve and maintain State of Alaska licensure in clinician’s appropriate field, and learn current/traditional methods of treatment.
    • Comply with the reporting requirements of the State of Alaska electronic charting and tracking systems (AKAIMS).
    • Provide itinerant Behavioral Health services to remote communities as needed.
    • Completes patient and related documentation in accordance with EHR/Meaningful Use standards and protocols and in compliance with APIA EHR policies.
    • Will abide by the Behavioral Health Program Policy and Procedures Manual as established by the APIA Board of Directors. Learn and use the accepted APIA, Behavioral Health standards of client file documentation, format, and process consistently, neatly, and thoroughly as required by the Policies and Procedures Manual.

     

    SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:   The functions below to be performed 100% of the time.

    • Maintain confidentiality in regard to clients, co-workers, and program matters.
    • Abide by the APIA Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual as established by the Board of Directors.
    • Perform other reasonable related duties as assigned or required by supervisor.
    • Must demonstrate maturity, dependability, good judgment, sensitivity, and empathy in performance of assigned duties.
    • Must be neat in personal appearance and attire.
    • Must be punctual.
    • Must have the ability to establish and maintain a professional business relationship with co-workers, clients, and outside agencies.
    • Must contribute to a positive work environment.
    • Ability to work independently and with a minimal amount of supervision.

    • Will comply with federal laws and regulations as required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996. (HIPAA compliance form for signature attached).

    • PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Carrying: 1-10 lbs. - 95% of time; 11-35 lbs. - 5% of time; never over 35 lbs. Pushing/Pulling: continuously 1-10 lbs. - 85%; 11-50 lbs. - 15% of time; 51-75 lbs. - 0% of time; never over 50 lbs.  

    The following are required during normal working day:

    • Driving automobile with and without loading and unloading;
    • Full use of both hands;
    • Full use of both legs;
    • Use of hands/arms for repetitive movement;
    • Good manual dexterity;
    • Good finger dexterity.
    • Twisting and climbing stairs - 10% of time.
    • Driving, balancing, bending/stooping, squatting/crouching, and reaching at, above and below shoulder level - 1% of time.
    • Kneeling 1% of time.
    • Crawling and climbing ladders - never.

     

     

    Required Experience

     

    • Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, human services or other related field required.  At least one year of experience in mental health, psychiatric emergency services, and/or substance abuse preferred.
    • Must be licensed or eligible to be licensed in the State of Alaska in applicants’ appropriate field.
    • Knowledge of federal confidentiality regulations and requirements.
    • Willingness and means to travel by small aircraft.
    • Good working knowledge of basic English grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation.
    • No outstanding history of substance abuse related problems.
    • Interest, knowledge and sensitivity to the Native lifestyle and culture.
    • Willing to take training and attend workshops and meetings periodically to enhance job performance and knowledge.
