    JOB SUMMARY:  This position will develop grant applications from federal, state, and private sources to fund projects benefitting the health and well-being of Alaska Native people. This position is responsible for the overall research, planning, coordination, development, writing, and editing of grant proposals to ensure submission on or before deadlines. 

    REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

    THIS POSITION IS PART OF ALASKA NATIVE TRIBAL HEALTH CONSORTIUM’S CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTALLY THREATENED COMMUNITIES. THE PROFESSIONAL WILL SUPPORT COMPLEX PROJECTS THAT INCREASE THE RESILIENCE OF ENVIRONMENTALLY THREATENED COMMUNITIES--THOSE EXPERIENCING INFRASTRUCTURE IMPACTS FROM PERMAFROST DEGRADATION, EROSION, AND FLOODING. THE PROFESSIONAL WILL COLLABORATE WITH COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP; FUNDING AGENCIES; AND FEDERAL, STATE, TRIBAL, REGIONAL, AND NON-GOVERNMENTAL STAKEHOLDERS TO SUCCESSFULLY PLAN AND SECURE FUNDING FOR HAZARD RISK ASSESSMENTS, PLANNING, CAPACITY-BUILDING, AND CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS THAT PROTECT, MOVE, AND BUILD NEW COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE.

     

    All Levels

    Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with other staff across the organization to stay informed about ANTHC initiatives, priorities, projects, and current funding needs.

    Researches local, state and federal funding sources - including government grants, foundations, and corporations - and identifies appropriate funding and strategies for projects and initiatives. 

    Identifies, convenes, and provides leadership to a grant team for each grant assigned that includes all parties necessary to evaluate and submit a competitive application.

    Performs all necessary background or factual research to develop a strong need statement for each application. Coordinates with grant team members to collect data, community statistics, graphs, maps, articles and related information for analysis in preparation for grant writing and proposal development.

    Writes and edits narratives to assure that proposals are responsive and adhere to submission requirements, and reflect the highest professional presentation of materials. Applies for grants.

    Facilitates post-grant submission meeting in collaboration with the grant development team, and others necessary, to evaluate the process for any improvements.

    Supports directors, program managers, and accountants in routine grant management activities.

    Performs other duties as assigned or required.

    Grant Writer II

    Responsible for all Grant Writer I duties. 

    Mentors other ANTHC team members as needed.

    Grant Writer III

    Responsible for all Grant Writer II duties. 

    Provides leadership, direction, and guidance to assigned staff.  Develops goals and priorities in conjunction with employees, and assigns tasks and projects. Counsels, trains, and coaches team members. Implements corrective actions and conducts performance evaluations.

    Consults with Division leadership in determining overall administrative and program direction, developing program goals, priorities and trainings, and in allocating staff and financial resources.  Meets regularly with Division leadership to discuss/resolve workload and program issues.

    Develops and institutes program objectives, ensuring program metrics are relevant, linked to division goals, and guaranteeing the program makes satisfactory progress towards objectives.

    Coordinates the completion of internal reports.

    Prepares annual budgets for review by Division leader.

    Required Skills

    All Levels: • Knowledge of Alaska Native culture and the Alaska Tribal Health System. • Knowledge of standard regulations and principles of grant programs. • Knowledge of business English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation. • Knowledge of standard budgeting and Excel program use. • Knowledge of customer services concepts and practices.

    • Skill in researching, interpreting, and writing grants. • Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands. • Skill in the design and layout of technical documents, and merging text and graphics. • Skill in working within deadlines to complete projects and assignments. • Skill in oral and written communication. • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others. • Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications. • Skill in working independently.

    Grant Writer III • Knowledge of effective management practices. • Knowledge of grant application and administration processes. • Advanced knowledge of standard regulations and principles of grant programs.

    • Skill in leading professional work groups and skilled employees. • Skill in managing staff and delegating work tasks. • Skill in developing, refining and improving performance metrics. • Skill in developing and implementing strategic plans, objectives, goals, measures and procedures. • Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.

    Required Experience

    MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

    Grant Writer I A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, public health or a related field.   Progressively responsible professional work-related experience, education, or training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.

    Grant Writer II A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, public health or a related field.

    Grant Writer III A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, public health or a related field.

    MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

    Grant Writer I Non-supervisory – Two (2) years technical writing, grant writing, fundraising, or project management experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

    Grant Writer II Non-supervisory - Five (5) years of successful grant writing for federal or state funders, and/or private foundations. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

    Grant Writer III Non-supervisory – Seven (7) years of successful grant writing for federal or state funders, and/or private foundations. Seven years of project management experience. AND Supervisory - One (1) year involving employee supervision.

    PREFERRED EDUCATION QUALIFICATION N/A

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION Experience in the Alaska Tribal Health System.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule.
