  • Responsibilities

    Under general supervision, provides research nursing services in a clinical setting to accomplish participant research study plan of care; supports the operations of the Alaska Native Medical Center, Community Health Services, Community and Research Services and Health programs. The following duties are intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities and ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES Recruits participants and explains nature of study. Performs complex nursing procedures as described in research protocol. Assures approved IRB consent has been obtained before enrolling participant into any study. Performs various research nursing tasks according to standard procedures and study protocols. Assists with daily management of operations on a research interdisciplinary team. Maintains knowledge about updated research data tracking systems and computer registry. Screens patients to ascertain eligibility for research study; reviews patients’ records. Reviews research protocols. Reviews and maintains current research study standard operating procedure (SOP) for study manual of operations (MOP). Assists in developing SOPs for new research studies. Maintains adherence to research protocols. Reviews charts as directed for study data. Educates clinical staff regarding new studies and procedures needed to collect, prepare, and maintain data /lab specimens according to approved research protocol and study SOPs. Performs simple laboratory work and prepares specimens for laboratory as needed for study protocols. Prepares and/or receives, logs in/documents, and files a variety of reports, and other study-related documents, including clinical research forms. Enters participant data information into computer system, and reviews for accuracy. Gives first aid as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required Skills

    • Knowledge of Alaska Tribal Health System, ANTHC, and Alaska Native culture(s) and politics.
    • Knowledge of modern nursing principles, techniques, and procedures for the care of patients.
    • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and concepts of disease.
    • Knowledge of medical research concepts and techniques.
    • Skill in managing multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meeting deadlines.
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others.
    • Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of applications.
    • Skill in providing effective nursing care, assessing patient situations, and taking effective courses of action.
    • Skill in reading and interpreting technical reports and grant documents.
    • Skill in providing first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation.
    • Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.

    Required Experience

    A Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Progressively responsible professional work-related experience, education, or training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION Non-supervisory – Six (6) years of clinical care, nursing internship, or research training experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience. MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

    • Current registered nurse license in the State of Alaska and remain active with all annual licensing requirements.
    • Current Basic Life Support card required.
    • Certification in research training is required within one week of hire.
