  • Responsibilities

    JOB SUMMARY:  Under supervision, performs decontamination, cleaning, assembly, sterilization, packaging, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instruments and equipment. 

    REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES All Decontaminates, assembles, and sterilizes instruments and medical equipment for the ANMC campus.  Follows standard precautions to control the spread of infection while in the decontamination, prep and sterilization areas.

    Complies with quality control through routine testing and cleaning to assure sterilization equipment and instruments are functioning properly.

    Inspects and verifies instruments and equipment function properly.  Submits work orders for equipment maintenance, repair, or replacement, and removes defective equipment from service.

    Participates in maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards.

    Maintains a clean and organized work area.

    Communicates appropriately using good interpersonal skills.

    Sterile Processing Technician II and III Mentors trainees.

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required Skills

    KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS  All Knowledge of oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of and adherence to patient confidentiality requirements. Knowledge of customer service concepts and practices.

    Sterile Processing Technician I Knowledge of basic medical terminology and anatomy.

    Sterile Processing Technician II and III Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, surgical procedures, and surgical instrumentation. Knowledge of various types of sterilization materials and equipment used in order to select the appropriate method of sterilization for particular equipment. Knowledge of the case cart system.

    All Skill in using analytical skills to solve problems and make decisions. Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks and demands. Skill in adapting to changing situations. Skill in following written instructions and performing multiple tasks. Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others. Skill in operating a personal computer using a variety of applications.

    Required Experience

    MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION All High school diploma or GED equivalent.

    MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION Sterile Processing Technician I None Sterile Processing Technician II Two (2) years of Sterile Processing or Operating Room Technician experience.  An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience. Sterile Processing Technician III Four (4) years’ experience as a Sterile Processing Technician.

    MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION Sterile Processing Technician I None Sterile Processing Technician II IAHCSMM Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification must be obtained during the first year in this position and remain current. Sterile Processing Technician III Current IAHCSMM Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification. Current IAHCSMM Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) certification.

    WORKING CONDITIONS The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:  Must be able to push, pull, and lift approximately 40 pounds.    ANMC is not a latex free facility; an employee should expect to work in an environment where latex may be present. May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule.  May be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations. May be exposed to hazardous materials, sharp objects, infectious diseases, blood and OPIM. Will stand for prolonged periods, frequently walking and reaching (overhead, extensive and repetitive).
