  • Responsibilities

    The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) has the responsibility of overseeing the standards of clinical practices for the organization’s Patient Care Services.  The CNO serves as the Chief Nurse Executive for BBAHC and participates with other members of Nursing Services and Administration in the development of patient care programs, policies and procedures to meet all requirements including ethical and legal concerns.  Establishes the direction for the various groups under his or her control, aligns department and group activities with the BBAHC strategic plan, integrates department and group activities with other areas and activities, and plans for growth and development of the departments and areas.

     

    The CNO is responsible for the implementation of an effective and ongoing program to monitor, evaluate and improve the quality and appropriateness of nursing and other direct patient related care.  Provide leadership and mentoring for clinical staff.

     

    The CNO will participate with governing officials, managerial staff, medical staff, and other clinical leaders in the decision making structures and processes of the Corporation.  Eligible for delegation of Executive duties.

    Required Skills

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

     

    • Coordinates, collects, analyzes, and prepares reports for the BBAHC Management and the leaders of the corporation. Provides direction (verbal/written) to clinical Managers.  Establishes timelines for projects and follows through appropriately.
    • Coordinates and assists with design and implementation of patient care services with other departments.
    • Champions patient-safety efforts.
    • Directs critical access hospital-wide patient care programs, policies, and procedures describing how patient’s care, treatment, and service needs are assessed, evaluated, and met. Assigns responsibility for program, policy, and procedure development to appropriate managers
    • Provides oversight and interpretation of concurrent record review and other performance improvement activities and other studies that evaluate the effectiveness of Patient Care Services in relation to their objectives and costs.
    • Implements an effective, on-going program to measure, assess, and improve the quality of care, treatment, and services delivered to patients.
    • Participates in evaluation of current services and programs, proposed changes, and expansion of services and programs. Assists management in selecting quality indicators.
    • Assist with recruitment and retention of staff.
    • Maintains an active awareness of the staffing patterns in relation to safe and effective treatment and budgetary goals and is responsible for monitoring the effectiveness of staffing plan.
    • Participates in activities promoting professional growth. Promotes a professional image of the healthcare profession and BBAHC.  Maintains and respects confidentiality.  Assesses clinical qualifications and develops programs enabling clinical staff to meet and exceed their required competency levels.  Initiates in-service programs.
    • Holds all staff responsible for using the BBAHC chain of command.
    • Upholds the mission statement and goals of BBAHC. Actively participates in developing and managing the Strategic Plan and associated tracking measures.
    • Assigns, delegates, and details as necessary for special duties.
    • Participates in defined and established meetings of the corporate leadership and with other critical and managerial leaders.
    • Actively participates in organizational risk management and corporate compliance activities in coordination with the Chief Compliance Officer.
    • Provide patient coverage on an as-required-but-infrequent basis.
    • Develops divisional budget submissions to align with the BBAHC strategy map.
    • Mentors, coaches, and counsels staff to develop excellent contribution to the BBAHC mission and assist in understanding the individual’s role in the strategic plan. Fully documents staff issues.  Resolves staff issues at the lowest level possible.  Keeps supervisor aware of staff issues.  Develops and timely submits annual staff performance evaluations aligned to the BBAHC strategy map. 
    • Maintains full compliance with the laws, regulations, grant terms, and BBAHC policies pertinent to the division. Ensures division activities meet all applicable accrediting body standards and CMS Conditions of Participation. Actively avoids fraud, waste, and abuse.  Seeks methods and activities to enhance BBAHC revenues.
    • Directs divisional Performance Improvement initiatives. Tracks and reports accomplishments.  Develops and oversees quality activities.
    • Responds to all Customer Comments and/or RMEs presented in a complete and timely manner.
    • Ensures divisional procedures align with and support organizational policies.
    • Other duties as assigned.

     

    WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is done in a normal office setting.  Must be able to see, hear, speak, walk, sit, bend, kneel, and lift and carry up to 20 pounds with or without accommodation.  May be required to travel to villages in small, unpressurized aircraft.  This is a Full-Time position   Attendance in accordance with the BBAHC Attendance policy is a job requirement.

     

    RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS:  Establishes a cohesive and collaborative Patient Care Team through active leadership.  Works collegially with the CEO, COO, Division Managers, and Department heads as required.  Works cooperatively with BBAHC staff, outside agencies and the community. 

     

    POSITIONS SUPERVISED:  Inpatient/OB/ER Manager, Outpatient Clinic Manager, Case Management Manager, Infection Control/Employee Health/Central Sterile Supply Nurse, Hospital Social Worker, Executive Assistant (shared with Clinical Services Division Manager).

    Required Experience

     

    • A registered nurse with a current license in any U.S. State or Territory. Must attain State of Alaska nursing license within one year of hire.
    • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.  Master’s degree in Nursing preferred.  Written plan to obtain a Master’s degree required.
    • Knowledgeable about Joint Commission, state and federal requirements.
    • Minimum of 2 years acute clinical practice with good clinical skills/ability to function as staff nurse. Minimum 5 years successful supervisory/management experience.
    • Dillingham based employee, full time.
    • Alaska Native/American Indian preferred.
