The purpose of this position is to provide general nursing care working collaboratively with physicians and multidisciplinary team members in an emergent care, primary care and urgent care clinic setting as well as some home health, hospice care and on-call assignments. The LPN will promote and restore patient health as they provide nursing care through the use of the nursing process and case management for people of all ages, genders, cultures, and backgrounds. This individual may oversee other personnel, including NAs, MAs and medical office staff.
Direct Patient Care
- Focused assessment of the patient’s medical status / condition, as determined by the patient’s age, physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs
- Provides basic education information to patients and family, focusing on self-care appropriate to their age and identified learning abilities and needs
- Performs focused assessment / data collection and documents subjective data (chief complaint and allergies) and objective data (vital signs/weight/etc.)
- Reviews basic health history information for patients including environmental factors, self-care and clinic discharge planning
- Administers medications and intravenous solutions skillfully and correctly.
- Anticipate and prepare examination room with equipment and supplies required for patient visit. Assists provider with examination and procedures per request.
- Utilizes universal precautions as indicated/needed in delivery of patient care.
- Performs lab testing (i.e. urine dip, pregnancy test, strep screen) including quality controls, and maintains all laboratory / diagnostic test logs
- Reports all critical lab values immediately
- Recognizes and interprets serious situations and initiates immediate and appropriate actions, including notifying appropriate personnel
- Able to provide medications, IV therapy within their scope of practice and training, ECG, wound care, basic patient education and other patient care skills
- Shares on-call duties
- Care for patient, within their scope of practice, on transport by boat to Ketchikan
Clinical Administrative Duties
- Documents in patient health record and quality control records
- Provides case management by being a patient advocate, resource, and contact person for patients and communicates between patients and outside care-giver / organization
Administrative Duties
- Participates in performance improvement activities as requested
- Participates in meetings and conferences
- Demonstrates genuine desire to develop strategies for improved clinic operations and a high standard of patient care
- Identifies problems and participates in their solution
- Participates in training and orientation of new employees, as assigned by supervisor
- Serves as a resource person to other staff in the area of one’s own clinical expertise

Required Skills
Minimum Qualifications
- Current LPN license in any U.S. state
- Knowledge and application of nursing care in accordance with accepted standards of care
- Consistent demonstration of a team approach to care
- Ability to work well with others
- Ability to effectively communicate clearly, concisely and accurately, by written and oral means
- Must be able to pass drug screen
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in outpatient, acute care, urgent care, emergent care or OB preferred
- ACLS and PALS certified within 6 months
- Computer literate

- Supervised by the Director of Nursing, Annette Island Service Unit
- Often interrupted by phone calls and various immediate needs of patients and the clinic
- Pace of work is generally fast paced with patient contacts throughout the day
- Requires standing, sitting, walking, light lifting, bending, reaching, and patient transfers
- May be called on time off, for emergencies requiring additional staff, to assist
