  • Responsibilities

     

    Responsible for all aspects of the W.I.C Program, including supervising staff, providing nutrition training, preparing reports, maintaining program budget and providing W.I.C Services to clients. Serves as team leader for the W.I.C Program. Responsible for counseling W.I.C clients who are identified to be at high nutritional risk according to Alaska State W.I.C guidelines.

    PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    • Oversees W.I.C Program operations pursuant to Maniilaq Association Policies and Procedures, federal and state guidelines and community input to ensure accomplishment of program goals and objectives.
    • Provides W.I.C services for eligible individuals including certification, quarterly nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion and education and referral to appropriate sources.
    • Conduct nutrition and breastfeeding assessments for High Risk participants and provide evidence based counseling and specialized formula authorization
    • Collaborate with women’s health providers and other health care providers in order to ensure optimal care for WIC participants.
    • Provides W.I.C vendor monitoring and education in compliance with AKDHSS W.I.C guidelines.
    • Provides training for the Nutrition Assistant, W.I.C CPA’s, Health Educators, and Community Health Practitioners (CHPs) specific to the W.I.C Program.
    • Coordinates services with the Public Health Nursing, Community Health Practitioners and other health care professionals.
    • Hires, trains and supervises the W.I.C program staff and develops and submits the W.I.C Grant proposal.
    • Monitors the W.I.C Program budget and authorizes expenditures for program funds.
    • PrePAREs and submits reports as required by the AKDHSS W.I.C. office, federal government and Maniilaq Association.
    • Performs nutrition assessments for WIC clients that are referred by healthcare providers, follow up as needed and comments all encounters inpatient medical records.
    • Implement the written office policies and procedures, prepare grants and maintain reporting.
    • Develops, implements and re-evaluates nutrition care plans and educates patients and family on nutrition issues.
    • Provides nutritional counseling for W.I.C clients identified to be at high nutritional risk by Competent Professional Authorities (CPAs) and completes W.I.C nutritional care plan, follow up and document actions in W.I.C client records.
    • Collaborate with Maniilaq Health Center dietitian on community health education opportunities.
    • Travels to villages to provide W.I.C services, medical nutrition therapy and nutrition education.
    • Maintains registration status and required licensing credentials/competencies through completing continuing education units.
    • Practices Maniilaq Health Center’s customer service model with a focus on customer satisfaction.
    • Develops an annual department specific Performance Improvement Plan.
    • Other duties as assigned

    Required Experience

     

    Registered Dietitian (RD) with the American Dietetics Association required. IBCLC Desirable. Two years directly relevant experience required, including nutritional assessments of patients of varying ages. Understands the developmental needs of infants, toddlers, pregnant and post-partum women. Ability to adjust care to meet clients’ needs. Ability to use the computer to assist with workload and ability to perform duties with minimal supervision. Good communication and patient care skills. Ability to work in a cross-cultural setting in rural Native Alaskan communities.
