  • Responsibilities

     

    Assists and attends to the needs of consumers who are undergoing the Withdrawal Management process from either drugs and/or alcohol by providing a safe environment under direct supervision.

    JOB DUTIES

    • Provides professional care to the consumers under the supervision of the Nurse and/or Program Director
    • Maintains the general cleanliness of the facility and cleans the dining area after every meal and as needed; responsible for scraping and stacking dishes after every meal, and prior to the kitchen picking up the dishes
    • Serves meals to the consumers after they are delivered to the facility and occasionally may have to go and retrieve meals from the Ralph Perdue Center (arranged through Withdrawal Management Program Director)
    • Will assure that all food is covered and refrigerated within 20 minutes of arrival to the facility
    • Removes bedding and cleans the consumers’ scrubs and towels, and returns the laundered items to the proper storage areas
    • Makes consumers’ bed and sets up their room upon consumers’ arrival and admission to the facility.
    • Launders personal clothing for all consumers after a thorough search of the clothing to ensure there are no belongings in consumer’s pockets
    • Provides motivational counseling to the consumers as needed by assisting consumers in the selection of educational videos and reading materials under the supervision of the Nurse and/or Program Director
    • Performs and documents vital signs as requested by the Nurse and/or Program Director (initial intake vital signs must be taken by the RN)
    • Performs urinalysis, pregnancy, and drug tests, and informs Nurse of results of such testing
    • Notifies supervisor if/when supplies are running low in the facility such as urinalysis/drug/pregnancy tests, gloves, shampoo, general housekeeping items, etc.
    • Performs BAC on consumers with the breathalyzer at the request of the Nurse and/or Program Director, and reports results to them (initial BAC must be taken by RN)
    • Be present as the Medical Provider administers a Physical Exam to female consumers
    • Ensure all visitors entering Withdrawal Management facility sign in on confidentiality log
    • Maintain and copy any paperwork necessary to ensure there are enough forms and material available to meet staff needs
    • Prepare admissions packets for the Nurse, ensuring sufficient supply for daily needs
    • Cleaning showers after each consumer use, also getting supplies to the consumers for their shower
    • Maintaining the sharps log for the razors given to consumers, documenting distribution and receipt of material for proper disposal
    • Safety checks and rounds every 30 minutes while on shift, more often as requested/directed
    • Attends staff meetings and training sessions as scheduled
    • Reports any observations and/or concerns to the Nurse or Program Director
    • May run occasional errands as approved by Nurse or Program Director, to pick up medications for consumers ordered by Provider, transport consumers to appointments, etc
    • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

     

    Required Skills

    NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY

    • Knowledge of substance abuse and mental health; and appropriate skills in working with consumers with Substance Use disorders
    • Ability to interface with consumers who may be undergoing withdrawals from alcohol and/or drugs and may suffer from other medical or psychological complications, particularly in a crisis situation
    • Understanding and sensitivity to diverse cultures and lifestyles
    • Skill in managing multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meet deadlines
    • Skill in oral and written communication
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, agencies, and consumers
    • Ability to work independently as well as with teams

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE)

     

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Current State of Alaska Certified Nurses’ Aide (CNA) certification, and maintain CEU’s
    • In order to transport consumers, you must be at least 21 years of age with a current Alaska Driver’s License
    • Current CPR/First Aid/AED certification
    • Within one (1) year of hire, complete Crisis Interventions Management Training

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE)

     

    • Associates Degree in Nursing
    • One (1) year of experience with substance abuse consumers in a residential treatment setting

    WORKING ENVIRONMENT

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

    The work is generally requires frequent walking, standing, sitting; occasional twisting, stooping, bending; and frequent exertion of up to 10 lbs, with occasional exertion of 10-25 lbs, and occasional exertion of 50-100 lbs to help lift or support consumer. The majority of work is performed in an office setting with a wide variety of people with differing functions, personalities, and abilities. The office is a non-smoking facility with outside smoking areas. The work may require local travel between various program components of FNA and/or agencies which may involve intermittent exposure to extreme weather conditions, as well as potential for mechanical hazards associated with the operation of a motor vehicle in bad weather conditions. Works in an environment where protection of client confidentiality is essential.

    Personal Protective Equipment will be provided where/when needed. Work schedules may be irregular to include nighttime and weekend coverage.

    SPECIFICATIONS

    Supervision Received:

    Position receives direct supervision from Program Director; however, incumbent is expected to effectively perform day-to-day activity as denoted within job description.  Work will be monitored through weekly meetings, monthly reports, and regular communication with the Director.  General guidelines for operations are based on program requirements and general policies and procedures.

    Supervision Exercised:

    No supervision requirements for this position.

    Position Impact:

    Impact at the program level is high.  Program’s level of compliance with program standards is directly affected by the effective performance of duties, especially as they relate to providing consumer services.

    Contacts:

    Contact with consumers who are dealing with emotional and physical challenges; including staff contact and outside agencies, to include, but not limited, to: FPD, AST, CSP, FMH-ER, CAIHC, etc.
