Provide for eye care needs of the persons utilizing Kanakanak Hospital or the village health clinics.
Required Skills
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Diagnose, manage, and treat conditions and diseases of the human eye and visual system. Examine eyes and visual system, diagnose problems or impairments, prescribe corrective lenses, and provide treatment. Prescribe therapeutic drugs to treat specific eye conditions.
- Determine each patient’s visual acuity, field of vision and hand-eye coordination.
- Advise patients about proper eye hygiene and care.
- Evaluate patients for the presence of diseases such as diabetes and refer patients to other healthcare providers as needed.
- Provide orientation, technical guidance, clinical instruction and assistance on eye care matters to the village health aides.
- In coordination with and under the supervision of the Optometry Manager/Optometrist, direct, administer and conduct on-site field clinics BBAHC villages.
- Must be culturally sensitive to patients and co-workers.
Required Experience
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education/licensure/certification: Must have a Doctor of Optometry from an accredited college and be Nationally Certified and licensed by the State of Alaska to practice optometry, including a diagnostic and therapeutic pharmaceutical endorsement. Must receive State of Alaska licensure within one year of hire and maintain unrestricted Alaska licensure continuously thereafter.
- Experience: Three years of experience as Optometrist desired. Contact lens training and work experience background.
- Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span (e.g., pediatric/adult/geriatric) and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the assigned unit’s procedures.
