Job Summary: The Chemical Dependency Clinician works as part of KANA’s substance use program team as a clinician specialized in addiction and co-occurring disorders treatment. This position is designed to be an integrated part of the substance use team that supports the program through teamwork and collaboration. The emphasis is on mobilizing all resources and expertise needed for treating the client as a whole person. Your job is to provide counseling services with fidelity to appropriate recovery models with a biopsychosocial approach that appreciates the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of each client. In general, you will provide individual and group counseling services to adolescents and adults, complete assessments, referrals, and psycho-education utilizing evidenced based, emerging models of therapeutic change to support a client's recovery process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned)

Develop therapeutic helping-relationships with clients that are based on unconditional positive regard, empathy, and honesty that is balanced with grace.

Complete integrated behavioral health-addiction assessments and screenings that demonstrate clinical understanding of evidence based appraisal methods and formulate DSM 5 diagnosis of addiction and common co-occurring disorders for adults and adolescents. Ensure assessments examine the whole person, differentiate between chemical use, addiction, mental health symptomatology and disorder, and medical issues, to establish an accurate diagnosis.

Conduct clinical assessment interviews that explore implications of a clients’ developmental history, family and social system, and the course their addiction has taken.

Create individualized treatment plans that are clinically relevant to psycho-pathology and addiction history and that integrate the clients’ personal complexities of social, cultural, vocational, developmental, and family dynamics as well as their current stage of change and level of motivation.

Provide group counseling for IOP, OP, and dual-diagnosis and according to program and patient needs. At times this may require flexible hours to accommodate for best scheduling options.

Provide psycho-education that develops client insight in to the biology of addiction, brain chemistry, brain function, and the genetics of addiction, specifically as it relates to the stages of recovery, cognitive and behavioral processes of addition, and relapse prevention.

Develop and maintain a solid treatment referral system that enables clients to access higher or lower levels of care when these cannot be provided by KANA directly. Maintain positive collaborative relationships with community agencies and participate in prevention work as assigned.

Work as part of the MAT team by supporting clients who use this option and integrate their anti-addiction and/ or medication management for other mental disorders in to the context of their treatment work.

Manage an individual, clinical case load comprised of adolescents and adults in the Kodiak borough and outlying villages.

Travel monthly to remote village by small plane to provide clinical services and supervise their behavioral health aide when assigned.

Participate in peer review process for quality improvement, attend clinical staff meetings, trainings, and continuing education conferences as scheduled.   Document all clinical services thoroughly and accurately in compliance with State, Federal, professional and ethical guidelines and submit documentation per agency policy.

Required Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in a Health, Human Services, Psychology, or Social Services discipline, and current (or eligible for) for receiving State licensure as LPC, LCPC, or LCSW, LMSW. Additional certifications in Chemical Dependency Counseling or specific advanced education in Addictions Counseling preferred.

Required Experience

Work experience 3+ years post-graduate degree preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in a Health, Human Services, Psychology, or Social Services discipline, and current (or eligible for) for receiving State licensure as LPC, LCPC, or LCSW, LMSW. Additional certifications in Chemical Dependency Counseling or specific advanced education in Addictions Counseling preferred.
