    JOB SUMMARY Under general supervision, the Point-of-Care (POC) Coordinator, also a Medical Technologist splits their duties between the supervision and management of the ANMC Point-of-Care testing program, and applying technical skills to competently provide a full range of sample test analyses and laboratory services. 

    REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES As Point of Care Coordinator Partners with the clinical staff to develop, implement, and maintain all policies and procedures surrounding the instrument-based POC testing activities within the ANMC hospital.  Ensures all POC testing activities are performed in a standardized, effective manner while maintaining conditions as required by accrediting and regulatory agencies.  Prepares POC program for inspection from regulatory institutions.

    Researches, evaluates, and implements testing methods and equipment.  Consults on technical issues and analyzer/meter troubleshooting.  Manages inventory of equipment, reagents & controls, and supplies.

    Develops, coordinates, and monitors training and competency programs for testing personnel, including proficiency test surveys.  Creates and maintains data base of testing personnel.

    Monitors interfaces to assure accurate reporting of POC results, including critical result notifications.  Audits and closely monitors all incident reports, quality control reports and any other quality assurance concerns, to identify and preclude risks of testing failures. 

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    As Medical Technologist Performs full range of simple-to-complex sample testing and laboratory services. Provides specialized expertise in microbiology, transfusion medicine, molecular biology and infectious disease safety.  Performs patient specimen testing. Ensures sample suitability.

    Evaluates, judges and interprets test results and ensures accuracy. Accepts and processes samples for on-site testing or forwards to contracted reference laboratories. Identifies and resolves inconsistencies in patient results. Maintains laboratory equipment and instruments. Ensures quality control and functionality of instruments. Prepares lab for inspection from regulatory institutions.

    Provides customer service for questions directed at the laboratory. Answers questions from patient providers regarding test processes, patient results, or sample collection techniques. Trains new employees and laboratory students. Participates in continuing education programs. Monitors, maintains, orders and stocks laboratory supplies. 

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required Skills

    Knowledge of clinical processes and medical terminology. Knowledge of privacy laws and regulations. Knowledge of customer service concepts and practices. Knowledge of protocols and practices in infectious disease control. Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation safety requirements. Skill in operating laboratory equipment. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees. Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.

    Required Experience

    MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION A Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field.  Progressively responsible work-related experience, education, or training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.

    MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION Non-supervisory - Five (5) years of clinical laboratory experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

    REQUIRED CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) OR Clinical Laboratory Scientist (NCA)

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION Experience in the Alaska Tribal Health System.  Training or experience specific to worksite wellness programs is highly preferred, as is experience with implementation of systems change in worksite settings.

    MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  This position requires the ability to stand or walk for varied periods of time.  May occasionally be exposed to hazardous working environment with hazardous chemicals and infectious disease.  Must be able to lift approximately 45 pounds. ANMC is not a latex free environment.  Therefore, some latex exposure can be expected.
