    AGENCY STATEMENT:

     

    The Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) is an Alaska Native non-profit corporation, charged with advancing Tribal self-determination and enhancing regional Native unity. TCC has an extensive rural health care system to support health and promote wellness to Indian Health Service beneficiaries.

     

    JOB SUMMARY: Performs a variety of specimen processing and clerical tasks for the laboratory service in support of Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center Medical Services and Tanana Chiefs Conference Rural Health Program. Incumbent will provide phlebotomy services for the laboratory and nursing staff, will process specimens for testing and/or referral to the appropriate reference laboratory, and performs testing offered on the CAIHC Laboratory testing menu under supervision of the staff Clinical Laboratory Scientists.  Incumbent will maintain, operate, and troubleshoot analytical equipment, perform quality control, and appropriately address issues.  Incumbent will rotate on-call responsibilities and weekend coverage as needed. Responsible for responding in case of internal or external disasters.

    Required Skills

     

    REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Director or the Lead Technologist Core Lab, job incumbent will be assigned from the following representative duties:

     

    • Provides clerical support for laboratory staff; process incoming and outgoing lab reports, make copies, maintain and organize laboratory filing system, aid in gathering data for end of the month statistical reports.
    • Collects blood specimens from patients. Evaluates specimens received for testing to determine suitability for testing.  Notifies physicians and health aids of rejected specimens.
    • Processes specimens into the laboratory for all sections of the laboratory including the send-out specimens. Properly accessions the laboratory specimens into the laboratory information system for testing. Enters and verifies results.
    • Performs a full range of clinical laboratory tests and examinations in all section of the laboratory under the supervision of the Lead Tech or designee.
    • Follows established laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintains records of patient results. Understands and follows established infection control practices.
    • Performs scheduled maintenance on all instruments. Performs quality control and notifies staff technologist of any problems and corrective actions taken.
    • Assists, as instructed, in the orientation of new employees. Participates in quality improvement process/projects, both in the laboratory and the health center.
    • Shares after hours, on-call and weekend coverage on a rotational basis with back up help from one of the staff MLS. Responds in case of an internal or external disaster.
    • Assists the lead MLS in administrative duties as required.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

     

    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of patients throughout the continuum of life as they relate to the collection of specimens and the interpretation of results.
    • Must be clear and concise, both verbally and in writing when communicating with staff and the public.
    • Ability to speak courteously when on the telephone. Ability to relate to the public in a caring, tactful, and courteous manner at all times.
    • Ability to uses positive interpersonal skills to promote success of the laboratory team members and promote laboratory and health center goals.

    Required Experience

     

    • MLT (ASCP) registered or eligible for registration, or eligibility through other national registry organization.
    • Able to demonstrate the core competencies annually.
    • Phlebotomy experience preferred.
    • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
    • Must be able to pass ICPA background check.
