  • Responsibilities

     

    The behavioral health aide (BHA) or behavioral health practitioner (BHP) is an integral part of the treatment team. Provides essential behavioral health services such as prevention, early intervention, case management, aftercare and follow-up for individuals and families impacted by a variety of behavioral health (addiction/substance abuse and mental health) issues. This position has four (4) tiers designed to provide progressively more responsible and independent work experiences. Progression between job tiers is based on which level of BHA courses the individual has passed and certifications acquired as a result.

    BHA I

    • Creates, develops and nurtures culturally sensitive interactions and connections with coworkers, participants, and the community.
    • Ensures exceptional Participant service:
    • Ensures compliance with established Participant service standards.
    • Promotes a participant-driven approach to service delivery that is culturally sensitive and based on Participant input and feedback.
    • Maintains quality, safety, and infection control standards.
    • Shares and receives information, opinions, concerns, and feedback in a supportive manner.
    • Per Knik Tribe policy and procedure, the employee will maintain records of required program data, complete reports and submit such data and reports in a timely manner.
    • Ensure that confidentiality material/records/correspondence is kept secure and that individual confidentiality is maintained according to HIPAA, 42 CFR and other related privacy laws and regulations.
    • Demonstrates an understanding of the BHA Code of Ethics and demonstrates an understanding of professional standards, Knik Tribe’s policies, and the law.
    • Demonstrates an understanding for professional boundaries and models appropriate personal and professional behavior within the community. Also, advocates for Participant’s rights and actively seeks and accepts supervision as needed.
    • Under director supervision of a clinical supervisor and adhering to Knik Tribe Core Values for treatment and services, this employee is expected to provide and document participation in the following services:
    • Client and community engagement
    • Prevention, community education, and community organizing
    • Routine client contact, screening, assessment, and evaluation
    • Community resources and referrals
    • Case management, coordination, and monitoring treatment plans
    • Counseling
    • Crisis management
    • Supervision, training, and professional development.
    • Support Participants and family members in methods that facilitate a capacity for self-empowerment.
    • Positively and promptly communicates information to team members both in person and in writing regarding Participant needs and communicates information back to the integrated care team regarding the status of a participant in the clinic.
    • Attends and participates in weekly meetings with supervisor and/or appropriate treatment teams to discuss Participant care.
    • Seeks out opportunities for professional development, which may include, but is not limited to; learning about Alaska Native culture/history, self-care, meeting certification requirements, etc.

    BHA II

    • Perform all duties and responsibilities of the BHA I with a higher level of proficiency and competency.
    • Under the direct supervision of a clinical supervisor, this employee is expected to provide and document participation in the following services:
    • Treatment planning
    • Medication management
    • Counseling
    • Crisis Management
    • Supervision, training, and professional development
    • Under the indirect supervision of a clinical supervisor, this employee is expected to provide and document participation in the following services:
    • Client and community engagement
    • Prevention, community education, and community organizing
    • Routine client contact, screening, assessment and evaluation

    BHA III

    • Under the indirect supervision of a clinical supervisor, this employee is expected to provide and document participation in the following services:

    BHP

     

    • Perform all duties and responsibilities of the BHA I, II, and III with a higher level of proficiency and competency.
    • Under the direct supervision of a clinical supervisor, this employee is expected to provide crisis management.
    • Under the indirect supervision of a clinical supervisor, this employee is expected to provide and document participation in the following services:
    • Medication management
    • Counseling

    ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    • Applies knowledge of the Privacy Act of 1974 and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) to ensure the privacy of individuals is protected to the fullest.
    • Develops and monitors a system for tracking the status of various actions and correspondence.
    • Performs computer-based tasks and utilizes electronic health record system.
    • Performs job with minimal supervision.
    • Accomplishes other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
    • Due to the coronavirus pandemic, telehealth will be offered to all Participants/clinicians who prefer that mode of treatment delivery.

    Required Experience

     

    REQUIREMENTS:

    Minimum Education Qualification:

    BHA I • High school diploma or GED preferred. If none of these, please contact someone at the Benteh Wellness Center (907-671-6871).

     

    BHA II • BHA II certification or an associates degree and completion of the BHA II courses within a year of hire date.

     

    BHA III • BHA III certification or a bachelor’s degree and completion of the BHA III courses within a year of hire date.

     

    BHP • BHP certification or a master’s degree and completion of the BHP courses within a year of hire date.

     

    Minimum Experience :

    BHA I - One (1) year of experiences in behavioral health. If coming on as trainee, no experience required;

    BHA II - Two (2) years of experience in behavioral health.

    BHAIII - Three (3) years of experience in behavioral health.

    BHP - Four (4) years of experience in behavioral health.

    Experience in the Alaska Tribal Health System is preferred, as well as training or experience specific to substance abuse, behavioral health, or community wellness programs. Additional Requirements: Travels frequently within the Mat-Su Borough. May occasionally meet with Participants in their home, at school, or another community-based setting.

    CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: • Knowledge of Knik Tribe’s Service Area and Knik Tribe’s Programs (if new, must commit to learning). • Adequate understanding with all Microsoft Office Applications. • Capable of basic maintenance for general office equipment and multi-line phone systems. • Must pass a criminal background check and free of barrier crimes. • Clean driving record. • Knowledge and application of professional and ethical conduct as guided by Knik Tribal Council Personnel Manual Section 8.1.
