Apprentice Electrician - Full Time - DEHE (20180861) Tracking Code 20180861 Job Description JOB SUMMARY Under direct supervision, is responsible for assisting Journeyman Electrician in Electrical Construction Services projects at Division of Environmental Health and Engineering. Each apprentice shall have read and understand the Apprenticeship Agreement and Terms of Apprenticeship. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES Pre-construction Duties; Assists the Journeyman Electrician with providing material takeoffs for electrical requirements of the project. Construction Duties; Assists the Journeyman Electrician in providing electrical code inspection/installation of all electrical work on projects. Construct project activities in accordance with ANTHC Guidelines. Community Relations Duties; Demonstrates and adheres to skills in observing and complying with all federal, state, and local ordinances, and the ANTHC Standards of Conduct. Works with the Journeymen Electrician to promote ANTHC and DEHE mission. Performs other duties as assigned. OUTLINE OF ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/FUNCTIONS to include but not limited to: Apprentices assist Journeyman level staff, building, maintaining and repairing residential and commercial sanitation or clinic facilities. They are assigned to multiple projects and must be able to readily assess/adjust priorities and refocus efforts as needed to meet individual project requirements, workload, and program objectives. 1. Level I Requirements (Introductory period) The introductory period is the first 1000 hours in on-the-job training for the apprentice. If the apprentice has previous experience and documented hours in the trade, he/she will still enter into the programs introductory period and credit will be granted after the period is completed. The credit granted will be based on the apprentices previous work, training/education record, and evaluation of his/her performance and demonstrated skill and knowledge in the introductory period. If credit is granted, the apprentice must also complete the related studies in order to progress to the next level and receive a wage increase. An entry-level apprentice will assist the Journeyman with all aspects of the trade. This includes install, alter, repair and maintain systems designed for all types of buildings, structures and premises. Apprentice Levels for Electrician Qualifying OJT Hours Related Instruction Training Component Level I (Introductory Level) 0-1000 hours Introductory Period Level II 1000-2000 hours Complete Level I (of related instruction schedule) Level III 2000-3000 hours Satisfactory Progress Level IV 3000-4000 hours Complete Level II Level V 4000-5000 hours Satisfactory Progress Level VI 5000-6000 hours Complete Level III Level VII 6000-7000 hours Satisfactory Progress LevelVIII 7000-8000 hours Completes Level IV Level II-IV includes the same requirements as Level I, with more detailed on-the-job training. Register for and pass 144 hours/year of required instructions from AVTEC. Ensures logistical support of work activities (tools, materials, and equipment) is complete. Assist in providing material takeoffs from single line, schematic, plan, and panel drawings. Constructs electrical control panels. They also alter, remodel and repair existing electrical systems and install electrical fixtures. Assist in providing technical assistance and troubleshooting of existing sanitation facilities electrical systems. Responds to sanitation facilities emergencies as directed. Required Skills Demonstrate the knowledge of sanitation facilities (water and sewer) construction; Demonstrate the knowledge of rural Alaska logistics, conditions, and construction materials. Demonstrate the knowledge of cold weather construction. Knowledge of Alaska Native cultures. Learn and understand the skill in interpreting written plans and specifications. Learn and understand the skill in preparing electrical material take-offs for the purpose of material ordering. Learn the skill in communicating effectively with engineers, other field and community employees and residents. Learn and understand the ability to perform the full range of electrical and mechanical tasks independently. Learn and understand the ability to interpret and follow electrical code and specifications such as blueprints, manuals, sketches, and work orders. Learn and understand the ability to determine materials needed for the project and prepare cost estimates. Basic skills in word processing and computer drafting programs (AutoCad). Skill in establishing and maintain cooperating working relationships with others. Required Experience MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION High School Diploma or GED. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION Non-supervisory None. MINIMUM LICENSE QUALIFICATION: A valid State of Alaska Drivers License is required. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires frequent travel to and within remote locations by small plane, boat, snowmobile, or ATV. Will be required to work outside the traditional work schedule. May be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work occurs mostly outdoors in all types of weather and field conditions such as rain, fog, snow, mud, and cold weather. Food and Housing: Food is not provided by the ANTHC. Office space is provided which ANTHC employees may use as housing. Time on site may vary from several weeks for small jobs to several months for larger jobs. Project Scheduling/Personal Travel: There are no scheduled project breaks for personal Reasons - it will be at the expense of the individual and approved by the Project Engineer/Manager. Daily project activities will be under the direction of the construction manager. MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Position is physically demanding and requires lifting and carrying equipment and supplies up to 70 pounds.
