  • Responsibilities

     

    Assists in planning, developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluation of programs designed to improve public health and identify, prevent and eliminate environmental health hazards within the BBAHC service region

    Required Skills

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

     

    • Provides general environmental health technical support and assistance to communities throughout the Bristol Bay region. Support is provided in the form of onsite consults and surveys. Provide technical assistance via telephone and through written correspondence on all matters related to environmental health. Technical assistance is also provided to other programs within BBAHC upon request or as needed.
    • Assists with the operation of the state certified drinking water laboratory.
    • Conducts comprehensive environmental health surveys in areas of water, solid waste, and wastewater to help Tribes comply with State/Federal regulations and to address deficiencies in the facilities to protect public health. Writes associated technical reports.
    • Assesses community health clinics, food establishments, and Head Start centers according to all applicable standards. Writes associated technical reports.
    • Conducts Epidemiological investigations of environmentally related disease outbreaks and conditions; such as: rabies, botulism, paralytic shellfish poisoning, food borne illnesses.
    • Conducts educational presentations on pertinent public health topics at local, state and national levels.
    • Works closely with representatives of local Tribes and other Federal, State, and local agencies.
    • Assists with education, outreach, travel and planning related to the COVID19 pandemic or other public health emergencies.
    • Drafts educational public services announcements on behalf of the department with a focus on 1) Audience, 2) Key messages, 3) Action orientation and deadlines.
    • Manage and promote the rabies prevention program including training lay vaccinators, ordering and distributing supplies, administering rabies vaccinations and communicating with the State of Alaska Section of Epidemiology.
    • with oversight and assistance, co-manage relevant Environmental Health grant(s) as assigned.
    • Facilitate and conduct relevant capacity building training opportunities for the BBAHC region.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required Experience

     

    • Bachelor of Science degree in environmental health or academic field relating to biological science, engineering, clinical or general science required.
    • Registered Environmental Health Specialist (either National Environmental Health Association or a current state registration) required to be obtained within two years of hire.
    • Solid oral and written communication skills.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
    • Previous Tribal experience preferred.
