  • Responsibilities

    Responsible for reaching out to meet the behavioral health counseling needs of the people of the Northwest Arctic Borough and Point Hope by providing individual, family and group therapy, substance abuse treatment making referrals appropriate referrals to other programs. Works in collaboration and provides support and guidance to the Village Base Counselors and Case Managers. The Itinerant Therapist reports directly to the Counseling and Recovery Supervisor and or designee. Travels to assigned villages regularly to provide services.

     

    1. Provides individual, family, group psychotherapy treatment, and substance abuse treatment. Adequately documents the treatment process and progress.
    2. Provides crisis intervention services and participates on the on-call rotation to provide crisis intervention on a 24-hour per day basis.
    3. Makes clinical decisions regarding the welfare of patients, including suicide assessments.
    4. Travels to assigned villages to provide mental health services on a regular basis.
    5. Performs court commitment proceedings for patients who are a danger to themselves, a danger to others, or are gravely disabled.
    6. Provides assessments and consultations to medical staff, police, schools, and other professionals and agencies as requested and when appropriate.
    7. Offers education regarding mental health issues to schools, other organizations, and communities.
    8. Provides case management, including making appropriate referrals to community agencies and institutions.
    9. Escorts, or provides for escort services, for mentally ill patients requiring placement outside the region. Continues to monitor patients while in other placements or facilities.
    10. Works as part of a team to provide optimal mental health services which may include making referrals to other Maniilaq and non-Maniilaq programs.
    11. Maintains confidentiality of patient records and treatment.

     

    Required Skills

    ITINERANT THERAPIST I:

    • A Master’s degree in Social Work, Professional Counseling, Psychology, or Family and Marital Therapy (or the like). Master’s degrees must be an eligible Master’s for an Alaska State licensure at the time of hire. If the candidate does not have a license eligible Master’s degree but has obtained a Doctoral degree that is eligible for an Alaska State Licensure, the Doctoral degree will be accepted as equivalent.
    • Must be able to obtain an LCSW, LPC, LMFT, or LAP within 2 years. Broad clinical experience.
    • Ability to work with sensitivity in a cross-cultural environment. Ability to adjust to “bush” conditions in Arctic Alaska.
    • Must be willing and able to travel frequently in small planes. Please inquire if supervision is currently available

     

    ITINERANT THERAPIST II:

    • Has met all minimum qualifications for Itinerant Therapist I. In addition has obtained at least a Master’s Level professional mental health license in Alaska. Examples of qualifying Master’s level licenses include Licensed Professional Counselor (under AS 08.63) and Marital and Family Therapy (under 08.29). Other qualifying Master’s level licensures are (1) Licensure as a Psychological Associate or (2) Licensure as a Master of Social Work. Candidates with qualifying Master’s level licensures will still be required to obtain their terminal Licensure (LAP, or LCSW) within two years. Please inquire if supervision is currently available*

     

    All Itinerant Therapist are required to obtain a minimum of a CDC I (or national equivalent) in Alaska within 2 years of hire. Upon proof of certification therapist will receive compensation increase of 2 steps (if completed within the 2 year deadline.
