  • Responsibilities

     

    Performs all tests commonly performed in a hospital laboratory.  Maintains, operates, and troubleshoots equipment.  Job incumbent will perform quality control measures.  Incumbent rotates on-call and weekend coverage.  Will respond in case of internal or external disasters

    Required Skills

     

    Representative Duties: Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Director, job incumbent:

     

    • Performs a full range of clinical laboratory tests and examinations in all sections of the laboratory (chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, specimen dispatch).
    • Follows established laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
    • Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on all instruments. Implements and monitors daily quality control, and advises on a course of action when values are out of range.  Documents all corrective action. Notifies lead technologist of problems and actions taken.
    • Collects blood specimens from patients. Evaluates specimens received for testing to determine suitability for testing.  Notifies physician of rejected specimens.
    • Maintains all record keeping systems in compliance with established procedures. Enters and verifies results using the laboratory information system.
    • Assists, as instructed, in orientation of new employees, and other medical personnel. Participates in quality improvement process/projects, both in the lab, the Health Center, and the rural villages.
    • Shares after hours "On‑call" and weekend coverage on a rotational basis. Responds in case of an internal or external disaster.\
    • Assists the lead technologist in administrative duties when asked and is acting lab supervisor in his/her absence.
    • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of patients throughout the continuum of life as they relate to the collection of specimens and the interpretation of results.
    • Responsible to access the knowledge and skills of department staff in the areas of principles of growth and developmental stages of patients throughout the continuum of life as they relate to the collection of specimens and the interpretation of results.
    • Builds effective, supportive relationships with co-workers and internal/external customers. Uses positive interpersonal skills to promote success of team members and promote laboratory and health center goals.
    • Supports and oversees moderate complexity and point-of-care testing in sub regional clinics and villages as needed. 
    • Maintain accurate patient records; maintain patient confidentiality.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

     

    • Knowledge and understanding of universal precautions and infection control practices. Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations regarding health care.
    • Demonstrated leadership skills.
    • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
    • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
    • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of professional medical technology/clinical laboratory science principles, practices, concepts, and theories providing for sound independent work.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory quality control and assurance procedures and principles of performance improvement providing for sound independent work.
    • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation.
    • Ability to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results.

     

    Supervision:  This position has no supervisory responsibilities

    Required Experience

     

    • The capabilities normally equated with completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science from an accredited institution and 7 years laboratory experience. MT (ASCP) registration or licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist (CLT) by NCA or AMT. 

    • Able to pass the core competencies annually.

    • Must pass background check pursuant to federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements.
