By joining the American Red Crossnbsp; you will touch millions of lives every year and experience the greatness of the human spirit at its best.nbsp; Are you ready to be part ofnbsp; the world's largest humanitarian network? nbsp; Job Description: Performs automated and manual test procedures on blood samples to assure the safety, potency and purity of the blood supply. nbsp;Adheres to explicit standard operating procedures and performs all duties in accordance with the applicable regulatory requirements. Major Responsibilities: Perform and interpret manual and automated testing procedures on blood samples in the laboratory. Perform and accurately record required quality control procedures. Recognize and identify testing irregularities, equipment problems, errors and other potential problems that may adversely affect test performance or results. Report problems to the Laboratory Supervisor or other appropriate supervisory staff. Trouble-shoot and implement corrective actions. Comply with all designated safety policies and procedures in the work area, including the use of applicable protective equipment when necessary to prevent exposure to potentially infectious agents. Maintain accurate, complete and legible records. Identify discrepancies and verify documentation performed by other technologists and technicians. Review documentation for accuracy, validity and completeness. Review test runs and verify test procedures are done in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures. Perform proficiency testing and validations as required. Prepare and evaluate reagents and quality control samples. Maintain inventory of reagents, equipment and supplies necessary for the performance of testing. Understand reagent stability and follow manufacturer recommended storage conditions. Properly perform and document required preventative maintenance and calibration on lab equipment. Demonstrate knowledge in all procedures performed in the assigned departments. Participate in continuing education programs and training/retraining as necessary. Participate in special projects and committee assignments as directed. Understand and comply with applicable federal and state regulations, AABB Standards, and ARCBS directives pertaining to blood banking and safety. Adhere to quality assurance procedures and current Good Manufacturing Practices. May be required to work overtime or provide on-call coverage as needed. Qualifications: Bachelors degree from an accredited institution with a major in chemical, physical, or biological science, medical technology or the equivalent experience required. (California only: Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license required.) Medical Technologist (ASCP) or equivalent certification desired. Will be required to meet specific state requirements. Minimum of one-year laboratory experience required, which may include an internship year. Degrees from foreign institutions will require credential equivalency evaluation. Ability to understand and perform complex procedures and techniques and work with complex instrumentation. Skills required for proper specimen and reagent handling, labeling, processing, preparation, transportation and storage necessary. Ability to correctly interpret test results, to include identification and correction of discrepancies. Must be knowledgeable of regulations and comply with them. Ability to provide excellent customer service internally and externally. Possess superior written and verbal communication skills. Ability to read, understand and follow detailed procedures. Analytical, numerical and reasoning abilities necessary. Proven skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making. Use of good sound judgment. Ability to prioritize, organize, and handle a high volume workload efficiently essential. Must maintain high standard of performance during repetitious tasks. Ability to promote cooperative work environment with laboratory staff. Basic computer skills necessary. Equipment used includes the following: telephone, printer, photocopier, calculator, fax machine, variety of laboratory instrumentation (mechanical, electrical and pressurized), and maintenance tools. nbsp; Essential Functions/Physical Requirements: Frequent standing, walking and sitting. Manual dexterity necessary. Good close vision and color perception required. Clear simple speech and good hearing required. Kneel, stoop, crouch and balance occasionally. May lift or carry up to 50 pounds occasionally. Laboratory environment with high safety or health considerations. Moderate noise level.
