    Lab Associate II Req Number 9335 Department: Lab Schedule: Part-Time Shift: Varied Shifts Hours: Sun-Sat, shifts may vary per operational need Job Details: * Position Summary Performs phlebotomy, accessioning of laboratory specimens, clerical and various clinical activities in association with patients' care for Bay Medical Center Sacred Heart Health Systems' medical center(s) and its associating laboratory clients. Performs pre- analytical and post-analytical duties required for quality delivery of patient care by the laboratory. This position rotates through hospital campus patient units performing specimen collections for inpatients, emergency room and outpatient collection centers as appropriate to fulfill overall laboratory operations as necessary. This position requires strict adherence to patient identification policy to ensure the safety and well-being of our patients. Position Accountabilities Pre-analytical activities: ¨ Registers patients, and non-patients ¨ Performs insurance verification and authorization ¨ Contacts physician's offices for order, or diagnosis clarification to fulfill corporate compliance requirements. ¨ Collects Laboratory specimens by venipuncture and fingerstick. ¨ Performs central processing including use of the pneumatic tube system, specimen accessioning, and accessioning, centrifuging and distributing specimens to appropriate section. ¨ Transports specimens within the medical center site from patient collection area to the laboratory accessioning area or uses the evacuated tube system appropriately. ¨ Investigates, prepares, and process send-out orders and specimens. ¨ Timely reviews pending collection lists for reconciliation of specimen collections. ¨ Assess and Directs pending collections on patient floors when assigned. ¨ Collection of specimens from inpatients, outpatients and emergency room patients when assigned. ¨ Communicates work related concerns, issues and status of specimens as appropriate to co-workers and lab leadership. Post-analytical activities: ¨ Processes reference Laboratory reports and forwards to appropriate patient location. ¨ Generates Laboratory reports on demand, permitted to fax patient results via LIS autofax. Does not give results over the phone. Does not give results to patients. ¨ Interacts with customers through telephone, fax, courier, email and mail. ü Assists with care and maintenance of equipment and restocking of supplies. ü Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients ranging from newborn to geriatric. ü Adheres to policy, procedure and protocols of the laboratory and hospital. Knows location of Electronic laboratory and hospital policy bank. ü Reads communications for each shift worked - to ensure job knowledge and job performance, change in protocol, procedure or policy. (email, posted publications, electronic policy/procedure websites) ü Participates in Huddles, Lab Meetings, and Hospital Meetings. ü Performs other duties as requested. Position Qualifications Minimum Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent Minimum Qualifications: 6 to 12 Months Phlebotomy Experience. Exceptions will be approved by Laboratory Director and Laboratory Coordinator. Ability to learn a variety of skills: computer lab information system (LIS), email use, and clerical skills. Good interpersonal skills: the ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing as well as have good telephone etiquette Ability to effectively relate to physicians, interdisciplinary department staffs, and laboratory department staffs. Strong customer service skills. Ability to multi-task in a volume driven, fast pace environment. Professional manner through appearance and conduct manifesting a pleasant friendly demeanor. Patient First Concept. Certification/Registration: Lab Associate Preferred Working Conditions: Exposure to: Disease-bearing specimens: risk of bloodborne diseases, body fluids and waste, malodorous chemicals and specimens, May be exposed to elements of patient care. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Subject to many interruptions in the course of the shift worked. May have irregular work schedule on occasion to fulfill the lab operational needs. Physical Demands: Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking. Agile Mobility and high level of manual dexterity required. Regularly subjected to reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching. Moderate physical effort (lift/carry up to 25 lbs). Lifts and transports equipment/supplies.
