    Hospital Coder Apprenticeship (DIV) Department Description:Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School renowned for excellence in patient care, biomedical research, teaching and community service. Located in the heart of Boston's Longwood Medical and Academic Area, it hosts more than three quarters of a million patient visits annually in and around Boston. BIDMC has a reputation in the local industry for successful mentorship of new coders and clinical documentation improvement nurses. BIDMC is seeking to increase its team of high-performing medical coders and are offering credentialed medical coders the opportunity to learn complex medical coding and work at a large academic medical center. Job Location:Boston, MA Req ID:25662BR Job Summary:Apprentice must posses a current credential such as an RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator), RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician), CCA (Certified Coding Associate) or other nationally recognized credential to qualify for this program. Apprentice will be on site at BIDMC three days a week (8am to 4:30 pm) for the first 6 weeks, during which they will complete the Association for Health Information Management's (AHIMA's) online Hospital Coder Immersion training and be oriented to the medical center. From week seven forward, coders will work from home coding cases of progressing difficulty, receiving feedback on their coding, and absorbing additional learning focused on a new body system every two weeks. Essential Responsibilities: -Reviews the complete electronic and paper medical record of discharged patients. Assigns ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes from documentation in the medical record, when indicated assigns CPT-4 procedure codes. -Abstracts coded data and patient information into the coding abstracting system in use by BIDMC (information includes attending physician, surgeon, dates of surgery, disposition, discharge date, and infant birth weight etc). Uses the AHA 'Coding Clinic for ICD-10 for official coding guidelines set forth by the Coordination and Maintenance Committee. -Sequences the assigned codes using the 3M DRG or APC Finder System, exercising all principles of assigning ICD-9/ICD-10 codes to determine the appropriate DRG or APC. Prioritizes daily work to ensure timely submission to the billing system. -Follows Policy & Procedure to identify and facilitate prompt resolution of documentation, abstracting and/or other account problems.Required Qualifications: -High School diploma or GED required. -0-1 years related work experience required. -Basic familiarity with computers.
