    Pharmacist Intern - Mercy West Lakes Pharmacy - PRN (Varied) **GENERAL SUMMARY**: ** Providestechnical support in the delivery of pharmaceutical care to clients of MercyMedical Center, including the preparation and delivery of medications andsterile products, review of charts for specific information/audits, stockingand ordering of drugs and other products. Performs technicalwork and tasks allowable by Iowa law for a Pharmacy Intern under thesupervision of a licensed pharmacist. **ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS****: * Prepares patient drug orders. * Delivers medications and IVadmixtures to patient rooms, critical care areas, and other ancillary areas. * Reviews patient MAR and care plansto determine need to return medication to the pharmacy for credit. * Picks up medication orders fromnursing areas and distributes for processing. * Credits to the patient and restockusable medications/IVs returned to the pharmacy. * Files medication orders. * Fills unit-dose exchange envelopes. * Processes medication drawers andorders files for admissions, discharges, and transfers. * Assists the pharmacists with audits. * Completes assigned unit inspections. * Restocks automated medicationdispensing machines (AcuDose or Pyxis). * Enters fill stock requisitions forother departments. * Restocks tackle boxes and cartinserts (crash carts, airway carts, latex carts), and completes check in/outprocess. * Communicates stock utilization andordering needs. * Checks medication expiration datesand alerts pharmacist when needed. * Compounds and labels extemporaneousliquid and solid products for patients according to procedure. * Answers telephone and processesrequests according to procedures. * Prepares IV admixtures includingTPNs, chemotherapy IVs, IV piggybacks, and syringes. In doing so, always followsstrictly described, specific policies and procedures. This includes those intended to comply withUSP 797 and hazardous drug regulatory requirements. In addition, inventoriesand orders selected supplies; prepares and appropriately labels stock sterileproducts; coordinates the supply of investigational products. * Charges and credits individualpatient accounts from pharmacy file lists. * Outpatient prescription processing,including: enters patient prescriptionorders into the computer; prepares prescription products for checking by apharmacist including proper labeling; manages third party billing; assists withinventory and ordering of pharmaceuticals. * Provides training and mentoring tonew employees and assists in directing workflow as needed. * After completingtraining, provides final checks of medications contained in and in responseto med bags and stock requisitions. * Performs patientcounseling related to medication use including, but not limited to, discussionof drug names, strengths, doses, and possible side-effects. * Completes robot andAcuDose quality checks. * Assists pharmacists,clinical specialists, and management team in patient-specific clinicalinformation gathering & departmental projects.
