Under moderate supervision, the Eligibility & Authorization Representative I performs tasks associated with verifying patient insurance, estimating expected patient liability, and determining eligibility. Organizes, updates, and maintains a worklist documenting progressing on tasks. Serves as the primary liaison between patient, CHLA, and third-party payers in answering questions and arranging payment. Answers and screens incoming calls while providing excellent customer service. Provides excellent customer services to patients, providers, and clinic staff. Answers telephone calls with respect and courtesy. Screens calls for problems that may be related to other departments / clinics and refers to clinicians when necessary. Provides general information regarding CHLA to callers when appropriate. Verifies patient insurance is eligible for service. Determines if patient is eligible for intended care at CHLA. If necessary, contacts patient to obtain correct insurance information, or informs patient of CHLA self-pay policy. Updates all insurance / eligibility information in CHLA systems. Estimates expected patient liability. Identifies and documents co-pay and estimated liability. Ensure notes regarding expected patient liability are thorough and outline explanation of costs. Organizes, maintains, and updates worklist. Within CHLA workdriver, documents and closes tasks upon completion. Updates work in progress on outstanding tasks. Maintains organization while completing tasks. Serves as the primary pre-service contact between patient and Hospital / Medical Group. Facilitates discussions and inquiries regarding billing and payment arrangements for patients. Provides additional documentation required by third-party payers for reimbursements. Continues education on payers / payer requirements and CHLA contracts. Maintains technical knowledge of items necessary for financial clearance at CHLA for intended services. Stays up to date as policies and necessary documentation changes throughout the year. Assists in educating peers to maintain teams thorough working knowledge of payers / payer requirements and contracts. Minimum Education/Training Required: High School diploma or equivalent Minimum Experience Required: Two years experience in medical office setting or hospital performing financial clearance processes. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Bilingual English / Spanish is preferred. Strong understanding of health insurance eligibility and authorization requirements. Excellent customer service and telephone etiquette. Ability to deal professionally and effectively with prospective, new, and follow-up patients or guarantors, providers, staff, and the public. Strong organizational skills and a comfortable working knowledge of computers. Knowledge of medical terminology and managed care system.
