    Cook Salary $16.16 - $17.14 Hourly Location OR, OR Job Type Part-Time Department SHERIFF#39;S OFFICE Job Number 16-81 (128) Closing Continuous * Description * Benefits Position Summary MUST BE ABLE TO WORK IN A CLOSED, SECURE ENVIRONMENT, WHILE SUPERVISING INMATE WORKERS, IN MEAL PREPARATION. MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE IN VOLUME COOKING, MUST HAVE THE ABILITY TO UTILIZE COOKING UTENSILS AND MUST POSSESS BASIC COMPUTER SKILLS. Actively participates in the production of meals, maintains and cleans kitchen equipment in a modern correctional facility, supervises inmate workers, maintains Oregon Food Safety standards, assists with food orders/supplies and rotation/stocking of the same. Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities a) Prepares meals for inmate detainees in the County Correctional facility. Also prepares meals for Corrections staff, Juvenile Shelter/Detention. b) Works from a prepared menu with specific recipes to prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner. c) Will prepare meals that meet various special dietary/religious or other needs that vary from the regular prepared menu. d) Supervises inmate workers in the preparation of meals including, but not limited to, mixing, baking, grilling, boiling, steaming and other cooking techniques. e) Supervises inmate workers in serving trays, not only insuring proper food items being served, but also proper portion sizes, special diet trays, and food quality/presentation. f) Supervises inmate workers cleaning the kitchen and kitchen equipment. g) Maintains kitchen records for meal counts, juvenile counts, and knife log. h) Maintains kitchen equipment and the sanitary conditions in the kitchen. i) Maintains open communication with Food Service Manager and Cooks to insure uniformity, quality, and continuity. j) May receive orders of supplies from vendors. k) Unpacks and rotates stock. l) Places orders in absence of Cook/Food Service Manager. Typical Qualifications SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS: Considerable knowledge of materials and methods used in institutional or commercial food preparation. Knowledge regarding the care and use of kitchen equipment. Ability to supervise and work with inmate help. Ability to stand for long periods of time in a closed, secure environment. Ability to meet high mobility demands. Ability to interact with others, using electronic, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to use cooking utensils including, but not limited to, knives, spoons, whisks, servers, trays, pans, pots, etc. Ability to use, clean, and perform general upkeep of kitchen equipment including, but not limited to, stoves, ovens, refrigerators, mixers, steamers, slicers, dishwashers, etc. Must be knowledgeable and skilled in radio communications. Should possess basic computer skills including, but not limited to, email, messaging, internet use, creation of documents, and other possibly necessary tasks. Must have the ability to prepare pre-existing menus, according to recipe, at consistently high quality levels. Should have the ability to be creative with use of possible leftovers to satisfy food preparation needs. Must have the ability to work varied shifts which will include weekends and holidays. Ability to prioritize and follow a plan to complete the necessary work within the shift. In a time-sensitive environment such as the Jail, the schedule of events must happen as planned. Ability to follow basic security protocols, once trained. Physical ability to attend defensive tactics and CPR Training for support staff. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSES/CERTIFICATES REQUIRED: Graduation from high school or GED. One year of experience in volume cooking in an institution or commercial firm or any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the above-described duties as determined by the Sheriff. Must possess a valid Oregon driver's license with an insurable driving record or ability to obtain within 30 days from date of hire. Ability to acquire food handler certificate from County Health Department. Employees are required to reside within two hours of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office. A psychological assessment will also be administered JOB SCOPE: Position encounters recurring work situations with occasional variations from the norm. Position involves a low to moderate level of complexity and operates from established and well-known procedures, menus, and recipes. Employee will receive supervision from Food Service Manager regarding adherence to departmental standards. Employee will work independently. Food Service Manager is not present when Cook is performing major portion of shift. Job Conditions and Physical Demands JOB CONDITIONS: Majority of duties are performed in the Jail kitchen with little to no natural light. Deal with uncooperative or potentially violent inmates using various non-quot;hands onquot; techniques. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: The physical demands are typical of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the functions of this job. Must have the physical capability to interact with others and perform mobility requirements of the position. ADA COMPLIANCE: Physical capability to handle high mobility demands and complex personal interactions. a) Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate to heavy physical effort in light to moderate work, typically involving some combination of climbing or descending stairs, running on flat surfaces (concrete, grass), stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of light to moderate weight (20-50 lbs.), walking and/or standing for long periods of time, bending twisting, lifting, stretching, sitting, filing, copying, computer use, telephone use, and radio use. b) Sensory Requirements: Many tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Many tasks require oral communications ability. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. c) Environmental Factors: Tasks are irregularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as, rain, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife. Tasks are regularly performed with possible exposure to dirt, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
