    Job Description

    Under limited supervision, this role is responsible for the assessment of patients including the development, evaluation and modification of the plan of care. Provides care to those patients via therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, the environment/technology, and other healthcare team member, according to established standards. Interprets and performs complex patient-care procedures specific to their area of expertise. Role functions as members of the Care Team and Support Team and have accountability to function as a team to accomplish patient outcomes identified in the pathway and plan of care. Patients served include all age groups (Infant through Older Adult as identified in Performance Standards).

    Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

    The following statements describe the general nature and level of work performed by individuals in this classification. They are not an exhaustive list of all duties performed.

    1. Provide care to unit-specific and/or hospital-based patient populations; practice independently with solid knowledge and clinical skills; engage in advancing own practice. Utilize and integrate evidence into practice.
    2. Be accountable to patients and families for the processes and outcomes of care during an episode of care. Be accountable to peers for the advancement of group practice on the unit, and to the nurse manager for overall work performance.
    3. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to plan and coordinate care addressing patient and family needs. Serve as a clinical resource as needed.
    4. Participate in implementation efforts addressing Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators (NSQI).
    5. Comply with standards and support activities for regulatory compliance.
    6. Support leader and charge nurse decisions. Serve as an effective primary coordinating nurse as required.
    7. Model practice consistent with unit operations to ensure safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, patient-centered care.
    8. Follow and support AACN guidelines for a Healthy Work Environment (communication, collaboration, effective decision making, recognition, leadership, staffing); participate as a team member focusing on elements within the Healthy Work Environment.
    9. Perform other duties as assigned.

    Education & Experience

    • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland or eligibility to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined by the MD Board of Nursing.
    • Associate’s degree required; BSN preferred.
    • Minimum of 2 years of previous RN experience required.
    • American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required upon hire.
    • Must meet all unit-specific certification requirements (PALS, ACLS, NRP).

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Maintain competencies required for the patient care setting; focus on advancing professional development. Demonstrate solid knowledge and clinical skills.
    • Exhibit highly effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
    • Demonstrate effectiveness as a multidisciplinary team member.
    • Ability to learn and use computer systems to manage patient information.
    • Participate in team-building efforts on units; support and model teamwork.
    • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Understand principles of growth and development over the lifespan and assess data reflective of the patient's population-specific and age-specific needs.
    • Demonstrate versatility and willingness to work within the PRN RN Standardized Program as set forth in assigned Unit-Based or Hospital-Based commitment levels.
