  • Responsibilities

    This Co-op position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the innovative research in the Cell Therapy Formulation group, a part of the Drug Product Development department at Janssen R&D. The Co-op will be working at the intersection of molecular/cell biology and process development with the goal of enhancing cell therapy robustness to formulation and cryopreservation stresses. The Co-op will also be involved in supporting additional internal innovation and process development studies. In addition, the Co-op will gain exposure to CAR-T characterization and potency assay, as well as understanding of different aspects of cell therapy process development and formulation.

    In this position the Co-op student will:

    • Design and execute studies to test effects of cell therapy product and process modifications on drug product robustness to chemical and thermal stresses

    • Design and screen a molecular construct library under different process conditions

    • Perform cell characterization studies which include but are not limited to flow cytometry, imaging, and potency assays

    • Perform transfection, electroporation and/or viral transduction of cells

    • Perform supporting duties, which include cell culture, reagent preparation, and other laboratory operational support

    • Troubleshoot technical difficulties in experimental procedures, assays, and data analysis

    • Design and clone novel molecular constructs

    • Author technical reports and present data to colleagues and functional line management

    • Collaborate with functional line management as well as scientists in related functional areas such as Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) team, Analytical Development (AD), Manufacturing, QC/QA, Clinical, Toxicology, and Regulatory (CMC)

    • Perform duties consistent with good laboratory practices including careful documentation in an electronic laboratory notebook

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Progress towards B.S. (Senior level), M.S. or Ph.D. degree in molecular biology, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, bioengineering, pharmaceutical sciences, biophysics, biochemistry, immunology, or a related field

    • Extensive experience with molecular biology techniques which include plasmid transfection, lenti- or retrovirus production, and viral transduction

    • Demonstrated ability to perform aseptic mammalian cell culture

    • Experience with flow cytometry and fluorescent imaging techniques

    • Strong skills in statistical data analysis

    • A self-starter individual capable of troubleshooting technical issues

    • A strong record of work experience and accomplishment in research labs

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • An M.S or a PhD degree candidate

    • Experience with viral vector design and molecular cloning techniques

    • Extensive experience with flow cytometry and FlowJo data analysis

    • Experience with protein design and bioinformatic protein analysis

    • Knowledge of T cell biology, T cell characterization, and functional assays

    • Experience with cell engineering techniques

    • Excellent track record of peer-reviewed publications
