Common Threads is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is national in scope, with strong roots in each of our 12 major program locations. We are dedicated to teaching children and families eligible for SNAP about cooking and nutrition education to encourage health and wellness. We equip under-resourced communities with information to make affordable, nutritious, and appealing food choices wherever they live, work, learn, and play. Overview
Are you passionate about cooking and nutrition? Do you enjoy working with children and families? Common Threads is seeking part- time Nutrition Educators to lead classes in New York City.
The ideal candidate is someone who is responsible for maintaining a high quality of implementation, scheduling, auditing, and communication with school administrators and staff, community partners, and the Common Threads team. A Common Threads Nutrition Educator is the face of the organization, teaching hands-on cooking classes and nutrition education to 1st-8th grade students, parents, and teachers. All of our student and adult programming consists of basic nutrition lessons, each with a recipe demo and tasting emphasizing fresh, healthy ingredients and adopting healthy cooking and eating habits. Hours will vary from week to week (0-12 hours but up to 20 hours per week during our busy season).
Responsibilities:
● Teach children and adults cooking skills and nutrition in-person (and sometimes virtually); give participants the tools to make healthy choices using existing lesson plans from Common Threads
● Communicate with school and partner organization staff and admin as well as with Common Threads staff
● Instructors will be trained on the curriculum, policies, procedures, and administrative responsibilities
● Instructors are required to follow the approved course curriculum, complete all grocery shopping and submit required documentation and receipts
● Administer pre-and post-surveys to students and families and manage paperwork, (if
applicable)
● Able to travel across all 5 boroughs of NYC; travel costs are reimbursed

Qualifications:
● Experience or education in nutrition, dietetics, community and behavioral health, health education, public health, nursing (or related field) required
● Experience teaching or working with elementary children and their caregivers is strongly preferred
● Possess positive, upbeat energy and a passion for wellness, food access, tolerance and awareness, and making a positive impact on society
● Strong time management and logical thinking skills; must be task-oriented
● Solid analytical and problem-solving skillset
● Strong skills in written & verbal communication, organization, and collaboration
● Computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel, Outlook, and Google Drive documents
● Experience working with culturally diverse audiences
● A commitment to the mission and values of Common Threads
● Must hold current food service sanitation certifications or obtain within first 90 days of employment
● Bilingual (Spanish/English/Other) preferred. Must be fluent in Spanish and English and comfortable teaching in both languages as needed
Additional Information:
● Payment is on a per-lesson basis and scheduled based on partner site availability. Hours fluctuate throughout the year and no minimum number of hours are guaranteed.
● Common Threads employees are subject to a background check prior to employment
● Common Threads requires proof of vaccination for in-person programming
● On the rare occasion that an instructor is required to teach virtually, the instructor
should be comfortable teaching in a virtual setting and must possess adequate
technology for teaching a class such as a laptop/computer/digital tablet, camera,
headphones/mic, etc.
● Candidate must attend mandatory training or other virtual or in-person training, as required
● Position reports to the Nutrition Education Manager
Compensation & Benefits:
● Compensation rates for in-person classes include:
○ Small Bites: $75 per class (each class approx. an hour)
○ Parent Workshops: $75 (approx. 2 hours, including prep and clean-up)
○ Program Events: $75 for the first 2 hours and then $20/additional hours
○ Cooking Skills & World Cuisine and Family Cooking Classes: $200 per class
(approx. 6 hours, including prep and clean-up)
○ $20/hour for administrative duties (i.e., training, attending meetings)
● The position is SNAP-ED grant-funded.
● Nutrition Educators are Common Threads employees eligible for paid sick time and
access to the resources within the Employee Assistance Program.
