At Johnson & Johnson (J&J), we are on a mission to change the trajectory of health for humanity. Interventional Oncology (INTO) at Johnson and Johnson is a convergent R&D unit which builds on the foundation of the Lung Cancer Initiative (LCI). INTO's mission is to integrate J&J's cross-sector expertise from Pharmaceuticals and Medical Technologies to develop novel drug and energy therapies delivered directly to tumors through innovative procedural solutions.

We are looking for a Data Science Summer Intern to work in Biomarker Analytics team within INTO. The location for this position can be in Boston, Massachusetts or remote.

As part of the Biomarker Analytics team, the Summer Intern will coordinate and analyze molecular datasets, including DNA and RNA sequencing data, to improve understanding of disease biology, enable patient selection strategies, and evaluate response in lung cancer. The successful candidate will use the computational pipelines and implement analytical approaches to evaluate the utility of genomic biomarkers aligned to the therapeutic portfolio of Interventional Oncology.

    Responsibilities:

    • Conduct literature review to understand and evaluate published methods for biomarker discovery and validation.
    • Integrate and analyze internal and external multi-omics datasets for downstream analysis.
    • Implement statistical and computational models to derive potential biomarkers of treatment response.
    • Collaborate and communicate results to an innovative team of cross-functional scientists including Data Sciences, Discovery and Translational Research, and Clinical Sciences.
    • Generate reproducible codes and effectively document study design, analyses, and findings.

    Qualifications

    • The candidate must be currently enrolled in a PhD program in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational biology or related fields.
    • Hands-on experience with analysis of high-dimensional multi-omics data (e.g., DNA-seq and RNA-seq) and statistical models (e.g., linear model, classification and survival analysis) is required.
    • Experience in using R for the analysis of molecular data is required. Familiarity with python and bash is a plus.
    • Strong collaboration, interpersonal, and communication skills to clearly articulate problems, solutions, and concepts to a diverse team of scientists is required.
    • Experience with projects involving 1) biomarker identification and validation, 2) association analyses using large datasets, and 3) large genomic patient cohort studies such as The Cancer Genome Atlas is highly preferred.
