    JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

     

    SAFETY MANAGEMENT:

     

    Work under the supervision of the manager/clinical programming manager/house supervisor to review assignment for shift, including receiving brief report about patient care activities and potential patient issues.

    Conduct walking-rounds of patient units while observing the milieu and providing assistance as needed for identified escalations or potential escalations.

    Respond and provide direction with a high degree of flexibility during crisis and emergency situations.

    Serve as a role model to staff on redirecting inappropriate patient behavior.

    Model appropriate techniques for the prevention and management of patient aggression to maintain safety.

    Report any changes in perceived patient status such as behavioral changes or mood shifts to the RN or house supervisor.

    Complete comprehensive incident reports as necessitated.

    Serve as an in-house expert on restraints and seclusions including interventions, techniques and age-appropriate strategies.

    Observe patient 1:1s and assist staff with appropriate behavioral interventions for the individual patient.

    • Provide personal safety screening of patients seeking admission to the hospital.
    • Assist visitors with the use of lockers for the safe keeping of personal items.
    • Perform security patrols of designated areas on foot or in vehicle.
    • Watch for irregular or unusual conditions that may create security concerns or safety hazards.
    • Sound alarms or call police or fire department in case of presence of unauthorized persons.
    • Permit authorized persons to enter property and monitor entrances and exits.
    • Observe departing personnel to protect against theft of company property and ensure that authorized removal of property is conducted within appropriate requirements.
    • Provide indicated staff escort services from the hospital exit to an associated parking area.
    • Must complete an on call week every 4-6 weeks as part of the emergency response team.

     

    PATIENT TREATMENT:

     

    • Provide timely accurate and thorough documentation of patient behavior and treatment interventions implemented to address identified problem areas in a legible and professional format.
    • Assure patient care is carried out as indicated in the treatment plan.
    • Develop and maintain positive therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
    • Interact with patients in a supportive, therapeutic manner; approach 1:1 patients at least every shift, prioritizing contact time.
    • Assist the unit manager or house supervisor with calling for staff debriefings following every Code Green, patient restraint, or patient seclusion event.
    • Maintain the environment in a safe, orderly manner, taking all necessary precautions and observing all safety and infection control standards.
    • Search patient rooms and belongings to maintain safety, under the direction of the RN, unit clinical services manager, or house supervisor, while demonstrating an understanding and respect for patient rights.

     

    PATIENT ADVOCACY:

     

    • Model patient advocacy.
    • Ensure patient rights are protected and act to prevent, identify, and report abuse.
    • Maintain patient confidentiality and professional relationships with staff and patients.
    • Identify areas of improvement with the program and make recommendations as indicated in collaboration with the Clinical Services manager and house supervisor.

     

    STAFF TRAINING:

     

    • Provide safety training for hospital employees, students, volunteers and interns/fellows.
    • Assist with the annual mandatory in-service/staff education needs by providing, as qualified, crisis prevention and crisis intervention training
    • Assist with ad hoc training and coaching of staff regarding safety processes and techniques

     

    COORDINATION OF CARE:

     

    • Communicate effectively with staff to address and identify unit needs.
    • Provide guidance and leadership in the area of overall milieu management of the units including role modeling a professional- and caring-approach to patient care.
    • Assist in providing on-the-job training and orientation of new staff.
    • Complete special assignments as directed by the manager or house supervisor.
    • Participate in projects, tasks and continuing education opportunities to improve skills and to expand competence in the delivery and supervision of therapeutic activities and patient care supervision.

     

    CONDUCT SELF IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER:

     

    Demonstrate organizational skills that promote timely responses.

    Communicate with all individuals in a positive and professional manner.

    Attempt to resolve individual issues with peers in a positive, calm manner with a focus on solution.

    Communicate concerns and provide solutions for same.

    Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude toward parties outside the Hospital (patient, families, visitors, vendors, etc.).

    Comply with the Hospital’s policies and procedures, including Human Resources, Infection Control and Employee Health policies and programs.

    Use courteous, cooperative and respectful behavior when working with patients, families, physicians, visitors and Hospital employees.

    Demonstrate a working knowledge of Hospital/department policies and procedures.

    Support changes in staffing/scheduling when unit and Hospital patient care needs require.

    • Accept reassignment in a positive manner.
    • Demonstrate willingness to adjust work schedule, when able, to meet patient’s needs.
    • Recognize need for support, seek appropriate assistance when needed, and continually remain alert to peers who need assistance, and offer assistance to them when structured activities are complete.
    • Project a professional image by wearing appropriate, professional attire. A uniform style of dress is required.

     

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

     

    • Position involves exposure to aggressive/combative patients and visitors.
    • Verbal and hearing ability is required to interact with patients and employees. Numerical ability is required to maintain records and operate a computer.
    • Be able to plan, control and direct all aspects of employee relations. Tact is required to deal effectively with employees and professional staff. Logical thinking and discretion is required to make decisions in initiating and implementing policies and procedures and standards.
    • Be physically/mentally able to perform job duties as verified by a physical exam by a licensed physician, per preemployment physical.

    Required Skills Required Experience

    EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

    • At least two (2) years of college or a Bachelor degree in a human services-related field is preferred.
    • One (1) year patient care or related experience preferred, preferably in a psychiatric setting.
    • If certified by the State of Wisconsin at the time of hire as a Certified Nursing Assistant, must be in good standing with the Wisconsin State Board of Certified Nursing Assistant Registry.
    • An _American Heart Association _Healthcare Provider CPR certification is required within thirty (30) days of date of hire.
    • Annual re-certification is required.
    • Formal training in crisis prevention and intervention within thirty (30) days of the date of hire. Annual re-certification is required.
    • Become a Certified Instructor for Nonviolent Crisis Intervention within six (6) months from the date of hire.
    • Maintenance of certification is required.
