Janssen Research and Development, L.L.C., a member of Johnson and Johnson's Family of Companies, is recruiting for a Summer Intern position in the Environmental, Health, & Safety (EHS) Group located in La Jolla, CA.
JOB DESCRIPTION
At Janssen R&D the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Group is responsible for site compliance with local and company EHS requirements. In addition, the EHS department develops and manages programs which ensure safe workplace conditions for all employees and demonstrates environmental responsibility towards surrounding communities. The EHS team supports the Research and Development operations and Site Services at our La Jolla facility. Under the mentorship of EHS engineers and managers, the intern will work closely with cross-functional teams to promote and foster a strong EHS culture, uphold compliance, and drive continual improvement. The EHS intern will engage in a variety of activities such as performing industrial hygiene risk assessments and exposure monitoring, environmental compliance reviews, training and education, emergency preparedness planning, and hazardous waste management.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Potential responsibilities include:
Assist in implementing EHS policies and programs at the site level to assure that workplace conditions comply with all local government and company requirements
Facilitate routine EHS inspections and incident investigations and work to implement corrective/preventive actions
Conduct EHS risk assessments of lab operations
Evaluate and control EHS risks in areas such as chemical hazards and properties, biological safety, non-ionizing radiation, etc., and EHS standards interpretation by participating on applicable EHS teams
Assist in collecting, analyzing, and preparing required reports for hazardous waste and other EHS issues
Review and update EHS training content and employee training profiles
Perform qualitative and quantitative occupational hygiene risk assessment and exposure monitoring
Develop sampling strategy, technical reports, and generate recommendations to reduce risk
Assist in development of EHS communications
Monitor hazardous and non-hazardous waste disposal programs including vendor contracts, waste profiles, and audits
Qualifications
Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Public Heath, Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Biological Sciences, or related field
Must be enrolled in university during the internship period
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in teams
Understanding of basic OSHA, Cal OSHA, EPA, and other EHS regulations
Excellent interpersonal skills with strong verbal and written skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills
Candidates must have authorization to work in the US.
