    TITLE: BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT - GENERAL PARK RANGER INDIVIDUAL PLACEMENT

    START/END DATE:  November 2nd, 2020 - April 23rd, 2021

    STIPEND:  $499.20/week  (+Education Award) 

    TERM:  25  weeks (including one week of PTO)

    REPORTS TO:  Bureau of Land Management - Royal Gorge Field Office

    LOCATION:  Canon City, CO 81212

    STATUS:  900-hour  AmeriCorps  Service  Term 

    BENEFITS:  AmeriCorps  Education  Award  $3,047.50  after  successful  completion 

     

      

      

    SOUTHWEST CONSERVATION CORPS’ MISSION 

    It is the mission of the Southwest Conservation Corps to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities and the environment. 

     

    PROGRAM OVERVIEW: 

     

    The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages public lands to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations; including the management and protection of our nation's wild horses and burros on 26.9 million acres of public lands across 10 western states. The Recreation Program manages public lands for enhanced recreation experiences and quality of life, encourages sustainable travel and tourism development, establishes proactive travel management and planning, ensure public health and safety and improves the condition and accessibility of recreation sites and facilities, enhances visitor services including interpretive information and education, and encourages partnerships, volunteers, and citizen-centered public service. 

     

    The focus of the intern position is to assist the recreation program in managing recreation areas within the Royal Gorge Field Office. The intern will help to educate visitors, perform fee collection, and help to build awareness of good behavior on public land. They will work with partners and BLM staff in this education effort.

     

    Work may involve early morning hours, late afternoon hours, and will be expected to work holidays and weekends. A standard BLM uniform will be provided to wear while performing patrol and public contact duties. The intern must possess a valid driver's license to operate government vehicles and equipment. Essential roles and responsibilities include:

    • Present a positive image of the area and the BLM, ensuring visitor contact is conducted in a courteous, professional, and friendly manner.
    • Learn the Royal Gorge Field Office recreation areas and general travel management maps for the area.
    • Become proficient in identifying issues that need attention such as missing signs, trash, and other resource damage.
    • Assist park rangers with monitoring trail conditions and high traffic recreation areas.
    • Assist park rangers with trail maintenance, including the removal of encroaching vegetation on trails and routes.
    • Assist with fee collection as needed.
    • Install fencing, gates, and signage throughout the recreation areas.
    • Assist with trash pickup as needed.

     

    DESIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS: 

    • Currently pursuing or completed degree in Natural Resources or related field preferred
    • Ability to hike long distances over rough terrain and operate a 4x4 vehicle
    • Communication Skills. The ability to provide clear information or data both orally and in writing, in order to provide advice and guidance to supervisors, co-workers, and the public.

    The  successful  applicant  must  be  self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision after the initial training period. The applicant must be able to maneuver and operate in a mixture of office and field work. This can include long periods of standing or walking on rough, uneven ground, bending, crouching, and stooping. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.

    • Trailer towing training
    • UTV driver training
    • Trash pickup safety and reporting
    • Chainsaw training (if available)
    • Basic Safety

     

     

    HOUSING: 

    Housing is not provided with this position, however, assistance in finding local housing is provided.

     

    REQUIREMENTS: 

    High School Diploma or GED

    U.S. Citizenship

    • Permanent Resident Card, INS form I-551
    • Alien Registration Card, INS form I-551
    • A passport indicating that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
    • A departure record ( INS 194) indication that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence

    Driver's License

    Per grant funding, candidate must be 18-30 years of age

    2. Knowledge of medical terminology.
    3. Knowledge of patient medical records and clinical documents.
    4. Skill in the use of Hospital computer systems related to ADT order entry, requisitions, lab inquiries and other computerized processes and related software/hardware applications.
    5. Knowledge of clinical procedures and operations.
    6. Knowledge of supplies, equipment ordering and inventory control.
    7. Clerical, word processing and office skills.
    8. Ability to read and comprehend English at a level necessary to follow written and oral instruction and safety precautions.
    9. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
