FAMILY PLANNING COUNSELOR

The Family Planning Counselor provides counseling tailored to each family planning patient and educate them on human reproduction, contraceptive methods, pregnancy testing, and pregnancy options.  This position will be responsible for assessing the patient’s needs and making appropriate referrals. 

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

• Screens emotional stability and gives pregnancy test results and provides pregnancy counseling.
• Provides educational instruction on contraceptive methods in accordance to Health Education Protocol for Family Planning.
• Assesses patient’s educational needs and tailors counselor’s session accordingly.
• Reviews tobacco use assessments provided to Family Planning patients.
• Conducts teen risk assessment for adolescent patients.
• Makes necessary referrals to on-site professional counselors and off-site services as needed.
• Performs eligibility screening for all Family Planning patients.
• Completes State eligibility forms on Family Planning patients.
• Collects and reports statistical information.
• Attends workshops, conferences, and/or meetings, which Clinic Supervisor/Manager consider necessary for fulfillment of duties.
• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

• CHW Certification
• Bilingual English/Spanish
• 1 year minimum experience as a Family Planning Counselor

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

• Ability to work with adults and youth in a variety of settings.
• Basic knowledge of reproduction, contraception and related topics.
• Familiar with F PACT and Presumptive Eligibility

• Work requires long periods of sitting, turning, twisting, reaching, speaking, hearing, seeing and ability to articulate clearly, use of hands to finger, reaching with hands and arms. 
• Ability to work efficiently in a busy front office.
• Ability to work productively in a small office space used by multiple employees. 
• Ability to relate well with patients and exercise good customer service skills on the phone and in person. 
• Ability to work with personal computer for long periods.
• Travel to and from clinic or meeting sites within geographic service area.
