Green Health Advocate Internship Status Full Time Position Summary IMANI WORKS!, INC., a career development affiliate of Trinity 95th and Cottage Grove Planned Community Development LLC, the owners and developers of IMANI VILLAGE, will launch its inaugural career development opportunity entitled IMANI GREEN HEALTH ADVOCATES (IGHA) Pilot internship project in 2018. The Project will orient participants in careers that are based upon Healthy Landscapes; Healthy Communities and Healthy Faith/Spirit. This internship is the product of a collective effort of various collaborators such: The Nature Conservancy; Advocate Health Care; University of Illinois at Chicago; Gary Comer Youth Center; Trinity United Church of Christ, and IMANI WORKS! Interns, hired by Gary Comer Youth Center (GCYC) and called Advocates, will assist with urban forestry field work, population health outreach including nutrition education, and faith community outreach for people on the South Side of Chicago. This eight-week internship is designed to offer participants the chance to explore careers within each of these three fields, and gain baseline skills necessary to be successful in these careers, as well as transferrable job skills applicable to any position. Four interns will attend training together, and work either as a full group or in pairs in the field. They will be assisted by a supervisor, and will have regular interaction with staff and affiliates of each of the collaborating organizations. This position offers an hourly wage of $14/hour, for 35 hours/week, 8 weeks. Fringe benefits will also be offered to successful candidates. The internship will begin on August 7th, 2018 and end on October 1st, 2018. Qualifications & Requirements * High school diploma. * Experience working in a team environment. * An openness to new ideas. * Comfort engaging with diverse audiences and openness to public speaking. * Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather. * Enthusiasm for living and working in an urban environment. Functions & Responsibilities * Evaluate the health of street and park trees. * Assess trees for signs of insects and diseases.

    • Communicate tree health risks to members of the public, and engage them in tree stewardship whenever possible. * Contribute to efforts to refine a smartphone application designed for urban forestry-related citizen science. * Participate in preliminary design of a healing garden in partnership with the Collaborators (as time allows) * Improve access to services by assisting patients in utilizing available resources. * Conduct follow-up wellness calls. * Schedule medical appointments for patients. * Assist patients with obtaining a medical home. * Educate patients about available community resources and referring patients to local social service agencies. * Coach patients on chronic disease self-management/ nutrition education. * Assist patients with completion of medical insurance program applications in order to build individual and community capacity. * Serve as an advocate for patients and the community to assure they get needed services. * Assist clergy and lay leaders affiliated with this project in faith outreach . * Participate in open dialogue about the intersection between the health of people and the health of nature . Experience & Education * Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, population health, and/or spiritual practices. * Communication skills with written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages. * Demonstrated leadership capability through previous employment or school . * Knowledge of the landscape and neighborhoods of Chicagos South Side. * Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s). * Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results.
