Journey Level Counselor Job Overview Journey Level Counselors are responsible for assessing participant needs and strengths in support of health and recovery in an incarcerated prison setting. Through counseling in individual and group settings, delivering curricula in accordance with program specific requirements, and case management, Journey Level Counselors assist participants in navigating systems of care while providing a supportive treatment environment. He/she will provide genuine warmth, empathy, and honest sensitivity with the goal of facilitating positive change in participants. Will act as a role model, modeling professionalism and positive pro-social life skills and behavior patterns at all times consistent with HealthRIGHT 360 and CDCR. Key Responsibilities Individual Treatment Responsibilities: Facilitates individual counseling treatment sessions with each caseload participant (caseload will not exceed 12 participants). Evaluates progress of each caseload participant and provides learning experience opportunities and offers clinical support to assist participants in meeting their treatment goals. Proactively links participants to both internal and external resources based on their treatment needs and follows up on the progress/status. Works with the participant to create a support network for the participants pending return to the community. Coordinates with the Transitional/Continuing Care Counselor to develop a Community Service Plan and transitional documents, as directed by CDCR, for continued community program activities. Treatment Setting Responsibilities: Facilitates group counseling sessions and community meetings and teaches classes on various treatment-related topics. Works directly with the participants to develop and implement a treatment service plan. Performs crisis intervention and communicates with treatment team as unforeseen situations arise. Plans and facilitates participant celebrations and special events. Covers caseload of absent colleagues when necessary. Responsible for delivery of program specific services to inmates participating in the SUD and CBT programs. Works in collaboration with CDCR and institution staff attending joint meetings, required training and upholding all norms, policies, and procedures of the prison. Acts as Mentor for Resident Demonstrators in the Mentorship Program. Administration and Compliance: In accordance with guidelines established by HealthRIGHT 360 to satisfy internal and external administrative demands, those of CDCR, and other evaluating agencies, maintains accurate records on all participants. Is responsible for making sure that participant files are in compliance, will adhere to the following paperwork requirements; weekly notes completed on time, initial treatment plans done within 30 calendar days, treatment plan updates completed every 30 calendar days, daily attendance recorded, one-on-one counseling sessions every 2 weeks, and TCU assessments completed within 15 calendar days, and other duties as assigned. Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Education and Experience Required: - High school Diploma or its equivalent; and must be certified as an AOD counselor, with a certification recognized by DHCS - Must also have a minimum of one (1) year experience providing SUDT services to an offender population - Culturally competent and able to work with a diverse population - Ability to express empathy and compassion and communicate honestly by providing feedback for negative as well as positive behaviors - Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word Outlook and internet applications - Knowledge of Clinical documentation, Electronic (treatment plans, progress notes etc.) - Experience working successfully with issues of substance abuse, mental health, criminal background, and other potential barriers to economic self sufficiency Knowledge - Culturally competent and able to work with a diverse population - Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word Outlook and internet applications - Experience working successfully with issues of substance abuse, mental health, criminal background, and other potential barriers to economic self sufficiency Skills and Abilities Required: - Ability to enter data into various electronic systems while maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the data - Professionalism, punctuality, flexibility and reliability are imperative - Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills - Integrity to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner - Action oriented - Strong problem-solving skills - Excellent organization skills and ability to multitask and juggle multiple priorities - Outstanding ability to follow-through with tasks - Ability to work cooperatively and effectively as part of interdisciplinary team and independently assume responsibility - Strong initiative and enthusiasm and willingness to pitch in whenever needed - Able to communicate well at all levels of the organization including working with organization leadership and high-level representatives of partner organizations - Able to work within a frequently changing project scope while maintaining overall direction and structured priorities Desired: - Knowledge of co-occurring disorders and trauma informed treatment - Knowledge of Clinical documentation (treatment plans, progress notes etc.) - Specialized knowledge such as: mental health issues, life skills, vocational training, anger management, incest, criminal behavior, rape crisis, grief, etc. - Knowledge of the TC milieu, 12-step philosophy, or other approaches to recovery - A second language (particularly Spanish) - Familiarity with penal codes and the criminal justice system and experience working with criminal justice population Background Clearance Required: - Must not be on active parole or probation - Ability to receive and maintain CDCR clearance Click here to apply for this job.
