    3453 Requisition ID: req1298 Job Title: Intensive Case Management Intern Sector: Health Employment Category: Intern Location: USA-Silver Spring, MD Job Description BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading non-sectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection, and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. The Suburban Washington Refugee Center, where the IRCs Silver Spring resettlement office is located, has resettled more than 2,000 new refugee arrivals, providing them a fresh start and opportunities to use their greatest resourcestheir motivation, their skills and their experiencesto become independent and self-sufficient new Americans. Currently, the IRC Silver Spring resettles and/or provides assistance to over 700 refugees and asylees each year. SCOPE OF WORK: The IRCs Intensive Case Management (ICM) Program provides case management services for up to 12 months to refugees and asylees who have special needs, such as significant medical needs, that cannot be fully addressed through standard resettlement services. Through a strengths-based, client-centered model of service delivery, the ICM program aims to increase self-reliance and community integration among our most vulnerable clients. Services include connecting them with internal and external resources, closely monitoring their progress through a series of assessments, and helping them achieve the long-term goals through their service plan. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Conduct client intakes and assessments, including standard assessments at 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after ICM enrollment * Assist clients in developing individualized service plans * Map community assets and help make referrals to community partners * Assist in scheduling and accompanying clients to appointments as appropriate * Educate clients on U.S. healthcare and social service systems * Input client information into IRCs database * Communicate client concerns with ICM staff and coordinate service plan with supervisor * Other duties as assigned LEARNING OBJECTIVES: * Gain understanding of refugee resettlement process, client services, and US resettlement experience; Expand knowledge and understanding of the journey of refugees, asylees, and victims of trafficking * Deepen awareness and understanding of health disparities within the US healthcare system; Develop an appreciation for role of cultural competence in health care * Expand knowledge of patient advocacy, health empowerment and health promotion techniques; Explore, respect and appreciate cultural differences in health perspectives and health literacy * Gain knowledge and skills related to coordination of services for complex health care needs of refugees and asylees Qualifications * Education and/or experience in public health, international development, social work, nursing, or humanitarian field desired * Previous experience working with refugees, immigrants, non-English speakers, and/or overseas preferred * Experience coordinating and facilitating adult learning preferred * Comfort and confidence navigating and educating about public transportation * Access to personal vehicle required * Effective interpersonal, organizational, and writing skills; High level of professionalism with attention to detail * Interest and flexibility in working in a fast-paced, multi-cultural setting * Proficiency in Nepali, Arabic, Amharic, Tigrinya, Swahili, Farsi or French desirable. * 20-40 hours per week commitment, 9:00a.m. 5:00p.m * Position requires minimum commitment of 3 months; Applicants interested in multiple semesters preferred; (Current enrollment in academic program or within 12 month post-graduation for the title of * intern.).
