At work in over 40 countries and 27 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 27 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency. SCOPE OF CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION INTERN WORK: IRC runs a Citizenship Education Program (CEP) for refugees in our El Cajon office to help refugees on their journey to becoming U.S. citizens. The IRC offers ten-week long courses and interview preparation workshops, in addition to immigration legal services. The CEP Intern will support the Citizenship Instructor in student testing, classroom activities, data entry, and extracurricular civic activities. RESPONSIBILITIES: · Facilitate pre- and post-testing of CEP students, using the CASAS and a civics knowledge test · Enter testing and other student data into two databases · Attend CEP classes to support the Citizenship Instructor in classroom activities · Coordinate class visits to local institutions such as the library and city hall · Support students to use technology to navigate the process of various civic engagement activities, such as writing to their member of congress LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Student will learn the process for refugees to obtain U.S. citizenship and become familiar with the citizenship test. 2. Student will gain experience working with multi-cultural classrooms on civic education. 3. Student will learn testing procedures common to non-profit education programs. Qualifications · Must be currently enrolled in a Masters program focused on Education, International Relations/Development, Social Work, or related field; or holds an undergraduate degree in Education with related experience · Experience with teaching · Experience with data entry · Experience working with diverse populations · Excellent organization skills, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to effectively collaborate. Needs to work with limited supervision · English fluency required; proficiency in a refugee language (Arabic, Farsi, Swahili) a plus · Minimum availability: 20 hours a week · Must be punctual and dependable (regular attendance is required) This position reports to the Citizenship Instructor.
