    3404 Requisition ID: req1234 Job Title: Food and Farming Community Health Intern Sector: Food Security Employment Category: Intern Employment Type: Part-Time Location: USA-San Diego, CA Job Description LOCATION: FFP project sites in both City Heights and El Cajon START DATE: June 2018 DURATION: 11 Weeks, 20 37.5 hours per week POSITION: Unpaid BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the worlds worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 27 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 27 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency. SCOPE OF INTERNS WORK: The Community Health Intern will work with Food and Farming Program (FFP) staff on three IRC community food projects that relate to healthy food access, particularly for low-income populations. These projects include: two community gardens in City Heights and El Cajon, the Market Match nutrition-incentive program at the City Heights Farmers Market (CHFM), and the Be Healthy El Cajon Coalition project for healthy community planning policies. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Gather, input, and synthesize client impact data about participants in the community garden program * Gather, input, and synthesize client impact data about the Market Match program * Support IRC staff on the Be Healthy El Cajon Coalition project with meeting logistics, community educations events, and research * Administer Market Match and support farmers market operations, as needed

    • Support on community garden work days and site improvement projects, as needed LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Intern will gain a holistic understanding of nutritional health in low-income communities, from both a systems level down to the individual household level. 2. Intern will gain a deeper understanding of operating, managing and sustaining community food projects. 3. Intern will develop writing, communication, and research skills as well as the ability to concisely summarize findings for workplace use. Qualifications * Currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts or Master of Arts program * Great communication and interpersonal skills * Strong attention to detail * Ability to take direction (written and oral) and to complete tasks independently * Minimum availability: 20 hours per week * Must have independent and reliable auto transportation * Must be punctual and dependable (regular attendance is required) * Must be available to work Saturday or evenings, on occasion * Must be comfortable working outdoors at the garden, farmers market and at community events This position reports to the Food and Farming Senior Program Manager.
