    3574 Requisition ID: req1262 Job Title: Refugee Civic Engagement Intern Sector: Community Development Employment Category: Intern Employment Type: Part-Time Location: USA-San Diego, CA Job Description LOCATION: El Cajon START DATE: June 2018 DURATION: 4 months; 20 - 35 hours per week POSITION: Unpaid BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the worlds worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 27 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 27 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency. SCOPE OF INTERN WORK: The Refugee Civic Engagement Intern will support IRC to run a Resident Leadership Academy (RLA) in El Cajon. The intern will support facilitation and logistics of a ten-week RLA training, which will help refugee community members improve their leadership skills, and gain civic engagement knowledge. Participants will learn the process for making meaningful change in their community, and engagement with local government, including developing and implementing a community improvement project plan. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Serve as an RLA facilitators aide, and help in training preparation and logistics * Help participants conduct a community assessment and develop the community improvement project plan

    • Attend local meetings, such as City Council, with RLA participant group * Help participants learn about civic engagement opportunities in their community LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Student will learn a civic leadership and engagement curriculum and process developed by the local government, and how this is delivered for local refugee residents. 2. Student will learn more about the populations of refugees making San Diego their new home. 3. Student will learn how to conduct a community assessment. Qualifications · Must be currently enrolled in a Masters program focused on Education, International Relations/Development, Social Work, or related field · Comfort presenting to small groups (10 15 people) · Excellent organization skills, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to effectively collaborate · Ability to use basic functions of Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office programs · English fluency required · A strong interest in working with a diverse, low-income population is required · Proactive, motivated and flexible; able to remain calm and adapt within a fast-paced work environment · Language skills a plus (Arabic or Farsi) This position reports to Community Outreach Officer.
