Student Intern-Pharmacy PRN **GENERAL SUMMARY****: **
Providestechnical support in the delivery of pharmaceutical care to
clients of MercyMedical Center, including the preparation and delivery
of medications andsterile products, review of charts for specific
information/audits, stockingand ordering of drugs and other products.
Performs technicalwork and tasks allowable by Iowa law for a Pharmacy
Intern under thesupervision of a licensed pharmacist. _ _
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS****: * Prepares patient drug orders. *
Delivers medications and IVadmixtures to patient rooms, critical care
areas, and other ancillary areas. * Reviews patient MAR and careplans to
determine need to return medication to the pharmacy for credit. * Picks
up medication orders fromnursing areas and distributes for processing. *
Credits to the patient andrestock usable medications/IVs returned to the
pharmacy. * Files medication orders. * Fills unit-dose
exchangeenvelopes. * Processes medication drawers andorders files for
admissions, discharges, and transfers. * Assists the pharmacists
withaudits. * Completes assigned unit inspections. * Restocks automated
medicationdispensing machines (AcuDose or Pyxis). * Enters fill stock
requisitionsfor other departments. * Restocks tackle boxes and
cartinserts (crash carts, airway carts, latex carts), and completes
check in/outprocess. * Communicates stock utilizationand ordering needs.
- Checks medication expirationdates and alerts pharmacist when needed. *
Compounds and labelsextemporaneous liquid and solid products for
patients according to procedure. * Answers telephone and
processesrequests according to procedures. * Prepares IV admixtures
includingTPNs, chemotherapy IVs, IV piggybacks, and syringes. In doing
so, always followsstrictly described, specific policies and procedures.
This includes those intended to comply withUSP 797 and hazardous drug
regulatory requirements. In addition, inventoriesand orders selected
supplies; prepares and appropriately labels stock sterileproducts;
coordinates the supply of investigational products. * Charges and
credits individualpatient accounts from pharmacy file lists. *
Outpatient prescriptionprocessing, including: enters patientprescription
orders into the computer; prepares prescription products forchecking by
a pharmacist including proper labeling; manages third partybilling;
assists with inventory and ordering of pharmaceuticals. * Provides
training and mentoringto new employees and assists in directing workflow
as needed. * After completing training, provides final checks of
medicationscontained in and in response to med bags and stock
requisitions. * Performs patient counseling related to medication use
including,but not limited to, discussion of drug names, strengths,
doses, and possibleside-effects. * Completes robot and AcuDose quality
checks. * Assists pharmacists, clinical specialists, and management team
inpatient-specific clinical information gathering & departmental
projects. MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS ANDABILITIES REQUIRED****: *
High schooldiploma or GED. * Currentenrollment in a pharmacy school or
program. * Must be registered as a pharmacy intern with the Stateof Iowa
