  • Responsibilities

    The Emergency Aviation Base Lead facilitates the safe and efficient operation of their assigned Base. The Base Supervisor serves as a mentor and coach for Program Flight Crew and as a liaison to Program Administration, Hospital Administration, on site Aviation staff, EMS Agencies and healthcare providers.

    Essential Function

    • The Base lead establishes a base culture that embraces and prioritizes flight safety and safe clinical practice and models this behavior daily.
    • Identifies potential threats to safety and quickly intervenes to prevent progression. Immediately escalates concerns to Program Administration through established channels.
    • Ensures that the helicopter meets all state regulatory requirements as detailed in12VAC5-31 of the Code of Virginia.
    • Active participation in LIFEEVAC Clinical Quality Management program by using 9th Brain platform to conduct required review of all patient care medical records. Appropriate escalation of concerns to Clinical Manager and/or Operational Medical Director when chart review reveals clinical care that deviates from approved patient care guidelines.
    • Responsible for maintaining clinical staff schedule and documenting staff call outs and late arrivals to duty.
    • Manages the Performance Management process for assigned staff. Escalates performance issues that exceed the verbal counseling standard to the Program Operations Manager or the Program Clinical Manager as applicable.
    • Assures that Base medical supplies meet established PAR levels, that all equipment is in good working order and that Flight Crews have the required personal protective equipment necessary to perform their duties safely.
    • Assures that Base medical equipment is inspected and maintained according to VCUHS Biomedical Engineering specifications.

    Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:

    • RN candidates must have a current, unencumbered license as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or an eligible compact state. OR EMT-Paramedic candidates must be a National Registry Paramedic and a Virginia certified EMT-Paramedic.
    • Must have current: AHA BLS HCP, ACLS, PALS, NRP, CFRN and/or CCRN or FPC and/or Critical Care Paramedic (as applicable to credential), Transport Provider Advanced Transport Course (TPATC)
    • RN’s must have Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification

    Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment including CPR, etc.:

    • Must maintain all licenses and certifications required for active flight status.

    Level and type of experience REQUIRED:

    • Minimum of three years recent Emergency Aviation flight experience.

    Level and type of experience PREFERRED:

    • Previous supervisory experience in the flight/clinical/prehospital setting.

    Education/training REQUIRED:

    • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree of Science, Nursing
    • Certification in a specialty area (CFRN or FP-C)

    Paramedic Candidates:

    • Minimum of an Associates of Applied Science in EMS. Current enrollment in a program with expected date of graduation within one year of hire will be considered.
    • A bachelor’s degree in another field will is acceptable in lieu of an AAS in EMS

    Education/training PREFERRED:

    • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree or higher

    Describe independent action(s) required:

    • Practices within the boundaries of the Commonwealth of Virginia rules and regulations governing applicable license or certification.
    • All clinical practice is guided by, and follows, the VCUHS Emergency Aviation policies and procedures and approved patient care guidelines.

    Describe supervisory responsibilities (if applicable):

    • Supervises staff RN’s and Paramedics in carrying out their assigned flight shifts and base duties.
    • The Base Lead will be allocated 12 hours a week of paid non-flight time for the completion of required administrative duties (as staffing allows).

    Additional position requirements such as shift rotations, weekends, environment, etc. :

    • Serves as an active member of the Program flight crew and maintains flight ready status. Will fly one 24-hour duty shift a week, or as needed, to maintain 24-hour base operations.
    • Assumes Administrator on Call duty per the established rotation.
