    OR Nurse - Perioperative Nurse Intern Job Job Number: RIH17789 Job Title: Operating Room Nurse - Perioperative Nurse Intern Department: Inpatient Operating Room - 1013121 Facility: Rhode Island Hospital Location: Providence, RI - The Rhode Island Hospital Perioperative Nurse Internship Program is focused on providing training and education to Registered Nurses who are either new graduates or have been previously employed in non-OR nursing positions. The program is also strongly recommended for RNs who have not worked in the intraoperative setting for five years or more. This Internship program is designed to equip nurses with fundamental skills that are critical for providing patient care in the perioperative setting. The first five to six weeks comprises the didactic portion of the program, consisting of Association of Operating Room Nurse's Periop 101 computer module training, classroom lectures, lab skills and simulation practice, and observational experiences in the operating room. During this phase of training, the intern will be paired with a preceptor who will demonstrate how module objectives apply to the surgical setting. The next 20 weeks of the program are spent in service-line rotations designed to familiarize the nurse intern with the various surgical specialties practiced at Rhode Island Hospital. AORN defines perioperative nursing as the practice of nursing directed toward patients undergoing operative and other invasive procedures. The PeriOperative nurse is one who provides, manages, teaches, and/or studies the care of patients undergoing operative or other invasive procedures. The PeriOperative nurse delivers care to the patient in the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative periods of the patients experience utilizing the framework of the nursing process. PeriOperative nursing is a purposeful and dynamic process that involves patient assessment; collecting, organizing, and prioritizing data; establishing nursing diagnoses; identifying desired patient outcomes; developing and implementing a plan of nursing care; and evaluating that care in terms of outcomes achieved by the patient. This evidence-based practice, occurs as nursing assumes a leadership role in fostering collaboration with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and other members of the health care delivery team. Rooted in the behaviors and technical practices of professional nursing, PeriOperative nursing requires a broad knowledge base, instant recall of nursing science, intuition which is guided by nursing experience, diversity of thought and action, stamina, and flexibility. Essential and significant services are delivered to patients utilizing knowledge, judgment, and skills based on the principles of physical, biological, physiological, behavioral, social, and nursing science. Identification of potential risk factors motivates the nurse to implement measures promoting safety and quality and to anticipate the needs of the patient and the surgical team. The PeriOperative nurse implements appropriate nursing interventions creatively, efficiently, and effectively while advocating for their patients safety.
