    BFT - Administrative Intern GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER 2019! Deadline to Apply is Friday, December 7, 2018 at 11:59 pm EST Administrative Interns join a specific MGH department for a semester and are precepted by an Administrative or Executive Director. Each department has different needs and those needs change from one semester to the next, but the preceptors aim to provide students with a broad range of learning opportunities that are consistent with the learning needs and objectives of the student and the priorities of the department for that particular period. In addition, MGH interns gain exposure to the broader strategic and operational goals of the large and complex academic medical center by attending tours, clinical shadowships, and meetings with senior hospital executives. Please note that students that apply for and/or complete an administrative internship at MGH are at neither an advantage or disadvantage if they later choose to apply to the post-graduate MGH Administrative Fellowship Program. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: **** Internship Competencies and focuses include, but are not limited to: · Financial Analysis · Human Resources · Information systems (IS) · Operations · Marketing / Growth / Planning / Fundraising · Physician Relations · Regulatory · Communication and Presentation · Space and Facilities Management Typical projects have included: · Developing process flow maps of current processes and making recommendations around how to improve processes · Reviewing and completing financial analyses and statements · Assessing and summarizing new business opportunities · Supporting the capital budget process and/or evaluating prospective products or vendors · Reviewing resumes and conducting telephone and in-person interviews to assist with staff recruiting · Supporting accreditation applications and site visits · Drafting communications; presenting recommendations and results In addition, interns often attend staff and/or team meetings, attend grand rounds or other medical education lectures, and observe clinical care and direct patient caregivers. Interns meet regularly with their preceptor to discuss their progress. In addition, interns meet regularly with each other and other preceptors to share information about their projects and hot topics in healthcare. WORKING CONDITIONS: Administrative office and clinical environment on MGH campus. Intern should be prepared to spend time in patient care and/or research environments, including inpatient, ICU, outpatient, operating room and research lab settings. SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: The MGH Administrative Internship is a competitive position designed for exceptional students demonstrating high potential. MGH is a busy and complicated healthcare environment. Successful students demonstrate the ability to juggle their workload and to absorb and assimilate an extraordinary amount of new knowledge in a very short amount of time. * Strong analytical and quantitative skills * Strong ability to relate to colleagues and work as part of team * Exceptional writing skills and command of the English language * Meticulous organization and attention to detail is essential * Ability to learn quickly and adapt to change, uncertainty and feedback * Competent in use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) EDUCATION: · Bachelors degree required · Currently enrolled in Masters degree program with concentration in healthcare management (MHA, MHSA, MPH, MBA, etc.) EXPERIENCE: · No Experience necessary but student must demonstrate clear interest in healthcare management FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY: **** Likely to develop budget and/or financial analyses Students interested in a summer internship must apply electronically no later than December 7, 2018. A limited number of interested students will be asked to complete a brief Skype interview with a group of internship preceptors. Students are usually notified by early February if they have been selected for a summer internship. Each students start and end dates is determined jointly by the preceptor and student based largely on the students school schedule, but most summer placements begin in late May and last 10-12 weeks. Prior to starting the internship, students are expected to provide their preceptor with any specific requirements their graduate program may require. Interns are required to complete a criminal background check prior to their start date and are expected to comply with all hospital policies, including protecting patient privacy and confidentiality. Internships come with a modest hourly stipend. Students are responsible for arranging and funding their own housing and transportation during the summer. In order to ensure a quality educational experience for each intern, we accept a limited number of students each year. Students that are not selected will be notified by email in March.
