    The role of the Gastroenterology (GI) endoscopic technician is to prepare instruments and equipment for GI procedures and assist in the procedure room; provide quality and safety to the patient guided by principles of procedural care; anticipates the physician’s needs intra-procedurally; is flexible and works well under ever changing conditions. The GI tech assists in a wide variety of different procedures and has knowledge and skill to adapt to changes in the patient’s condition under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The GI tech provides therapeutic services necessary for the care of the patient within their scope of care. The GI tech will also provide services within their scope in the Clinic, recovery area and assisting with Unit Clerk duties. The GI tech must be competent in the handling, cleaning and processing of all equipment and flexible endoscopes used in procedures as well as documenation of cleaning and high level disinfection processes.

    Required Skills

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • High school graduate or GED required.
    • 6 months previous GI Technician or Surgical Technician (ST) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
    • Current BCLS certification is required prior to hire; certification must be kept current for the duration of employment.
    • Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)

    OR formal training in the military as a surgical corpsman or medic OR a minimum of 6 months demonstrated scrub experience performing a wide variety of procedures.

    • Ability to stand for the majority of the work time; sometimes wearing a 10 lb. x-ray apron for several hours at a time; lifting 50 lbs., pushing/pulling 125 lbs, frequent lifting of 25 lb. sterile trays during the course of the day.
    • Good communication and written skills.
    • Ability to handle stressful situations and changing conditions; flexibility to adapt to scheduling changes and changes in patient condition. Good time management skills and ability to be self-directed.
