    Job Description

    I. JOB SUMMARY

    The Volunteer Program Supervisor has overall responsibility for the management and coordination of the Foster Grandparent Program (FGP), including recruitment and supervision of assigned staff and volunteers and assisting staff in their job duties.  The ability to maintain warm, positive relationships between the volunteers and the host setting personnel is essential.  Maintaining a positive and amenable working relationship with all liaisons from various funding sources, program staff and personnel from each volunteer site is required.

    II. DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    • Overall coordination and administration of FGP.
    • Recruitment, hiring, orientation, supervision and evaluation of FGP staff.
    • Responsible for the recruitment, training and placement of all volunteers in appropriate assignments, including New Volunteer Orientation and ongoing monthly in-service training.
    • Development and maintenance of community resource material.
    • Maintain effective and positive working relationships with all affiliated community service agencies and their designated liaisons.
    • Coordinate with the Foster Grandparent (FG) Coordinators in the assigning of foster grandparents to foster grandchildren.
    • Assist FG Coordinators in preparing performance evaluations for each foster grandparent.
    • Meet regularly with the Associate Director of Senior Programs to evaluate performance, program operation and development, etc.
    • Assist the Associate Director of Senior Programs in developing new or improved operational modes when and where needed in order to best serve the program.
    • Serve as an advocate to the community as well as attend appropriate public hearings to highlight the importance and value of the healthy older adult volunteer and the benefits of this senior volunteer program.
    • Develop annual program goals and objectives in collaboration with the Associate Director of Senior Programs.
    • Ensure compliance and accountability for meeting both programmatic and fiscal goals and objectives as outlined in the respective federal, state and local grants.
    • Monitor all program expenditures and budgetary issues.
    • Ensure compliance with all contractual and licensing requirements of DHHS related to FGP services.
    • Responsible for compiling, organizing, and preparing written reports and other written documents as required.
    • Demonstrate commitment to the social sector with a passion for MCHS’s mission and vision.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Senior Programs and/or the Director of Community Programs.

     

    III. BASIC COMPETENCIES

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:         

    • Bachelor's Degree in Human Services preferred; Associate's Degree with experience in human services field will be considered.
    • Five (5) years of combined experience in leadership, human services, gerontology  and volunteer recruitment coupled with administrative experience is required. 
    • Familiarity with the Metro Detroit area and other community resources.
    • Must meet the State’s Moral Character standard.

     

    KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

    • Computer and software applications (Windows, MS Office, Internet applications, etc.) necessary to perform the duties of the position.
    • Policies and procedures related to child welfare.
    • Family and child dynamics.

     

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES NEEDED:

    • Strong interest and experience in fundraising and community relations is preferred.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communicative skills and flexibility.
    • Demonstrate leadership and a high commitment to the field of aging.
    • Ability to relate to personnel in order to provide maximum cooperation and good working conditions.
    • Knowledge and/or awareness of behavior in order to determine appropriate assignment of foster grandparents to foster grandchildren and to evaluate when changes are needed, etc.
    • Motivate, develop, and direct people as they work; identify the best people for the job.
    • Manage time and multiple priorities; meet deadlines.
    • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
    • Exercise professional judgment in making decisions.
    • Handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation.
    • Attend and conduct agency training and maintain necessary certifications and licenses.
    • Maintain a Michigan driver’s license and driving record that allows the operation of an agency or personal vehicle for agency business or to transport clients as needed.
