    Job Description

    I. General Summary

    • Under general supervision, identifies, registers, and maintains records of all cancer patients by utilizing the IMPAC-MRS system. Analyze registry data; disseminate information in accordance with professional ethics. Assure data quality, work effectively and efficiently, as well as consistent and accurate communication with other Medical System staff, the Maryland Cancer Registry and other oncology data coordinators throughout the State.

    II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

    The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

    • Performs daily coding and abstracting activities of the Tumor Registry area.
    • Identifies all cases of malignant diseases treated at the Medical Center.
    • Abstract information should include at a minimum, demographic characteristics, history of cancer, diagnostic procedures, diagnosis, state, extent of disease and treatment.

    Education and Experience

    • Certification as Certified Tumor Registrar (or eligible) from the National Cancer Registrar Association required. Minimum of an Associate Degree or other health information management credentials (CCS, CCS-P, RHIT, RHIA, CPC, CPC-9, etc.) preferred.
    • Progressive experience as a health information technician or manager in a Tumor Registry, HIM Department or similar function.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Knowledge of FORDS Manual, Collaborative Staging, Multiple Primaries and Histology Manual required
    • Proficient knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and medical records science, to include documentation requirements--both regulatory and institutional—record assembly and analysis, coding, abstracting, research methods/data-gathering and automated record management applications
    • Knowledge of personal computer, medical records applications, IMPAC-MRS and general familiarity with mainframe Hospital Information System programs. Basic understanding of anatomy and physiology is necessary in order to read and interpret medical record documentation
