It is one of the oldest and largest volunteer-based organizations dedicated to improving the health and lives of children worldwide through access to surgical care. Since 1982, Operation Smile has developed expertise in mobilizing volunteer medical teams to conduct surgical missions in resource-poor environments while adhering to the highest standards of care and safety. Operation Smile helps to fill the gap in providing access to safe, well-timed surgeries by partnering with hospitals, governments and ministries of health, training local medical personnel, and donating much-needed supplies and equipment to surgical sites around the world. Project Overview: § Operation Smile is looking for an unpaid Medical Records Intern at our headquarters office in Virginia Beach, VA. The Intern will facilitate the translation and creation of Operation Smiles new medical records systems, reporting to the Clinical Data Specialist. Internship Takeaways: § Gain hands-on experience in the medical records field within an international nonprofit. § Create and document the medical records process. § Database and Office experience. Core Responsibilities: § Process and reformat medical records documentation and training material to accommodate the program countrys local language creating easy to read online forms § Cataloging and reconciling various versions of both paper and electronic charts § Assist in the testing of new program material § Communicate with volunteers and staff as directed § Participate in team meetings, events and other projects as requested Minimum requirements/experience required: § Proficiency with Adobe Design software, particularly LiveCycle § Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite § A driven, fast learner with the ability to work independently § Strong organizational skills and attention to detail § Strong written and oral communication skills § Ability to handle confidential material appropriately with discretion Time commitment: § Minimum of a 3 month commitment (May through August) § Days/hours are flexible during the work week between 9-5, accumulating in approximately 15-20 hours each week.
