The Preclinical Sciences and Translational Safety (PSTS) Molecular Pathology group within Johnson & Johnson Research and Development is recruiting for a summer intern located in San Diego, CA. In this role, the intern will be provided hands-on experience with histological techniques, assay development, fluorescent and chromogenic immunohistochemistry, tissue culture and image analysis. The project aim is to develop an immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay on formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissues (FFPE) and learn the end to end histological process to support different functions at Johnson & Johnson Research and Development. The project will entail learning histological techniques, a literature and database search to find antibodies, optimization of assay conditions, and image analysis using HALO software.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Learn about and perform routine histological techniques such as: tissue fixation, processing, embedding and sectioning
Culturing of cell lines for assay run controls
Craft and develop an immunohistochemistry assay to support different functions
Image analysis using HALO software
Provide experimental and workflow updates in oral and written communications
Design, implement, and troubleshoot experimentation to validate hypotheses
Demonstrate independent problem solving and detailed data-driven experimental design
EDUCATION:
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
REQUIRED:
Basic laboratory skills including making dilutions from stock solutions
Experience working with Microsoft excel and PowerPoint
Open minded and willing to learn about immunohistochemistry and other histological techniques
PREFERRED:
Knowledge of immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence is a plus
Knowledge of aseptic technique and tissue culture is a plus
Knowledge of histology is a plus
